Tom Rogic, Mathew Leckie, Aziz Behich and sub Tim Cahill, who became the first Australian to appear at 4 World Cups, all had notable opportunities to score but the Australia Vs Peru game was defined by a beautiful 18th minute volley from Andre Carillo and a 35th international goal for veteran Paolo Guerrero in the 50th minute.

Peru’s centre-half pairing of Anderson Santamaria and Christian Ramos made number of fine blocks and interceptions to deny the Aussie front-line much space in the middle. Peru scored a lucky second when Christian Cueva’s cross deflected off the inside of Jedinak’s heel into the path of Paolo Guerrero, whose shot took a touch of Mark Milligan as it flew in. Christian Cueva also hit the post later on as Peru finished 3rd above Australia after winning the Australia Vs Peru encounter, while France qualified as group winners and Denmark as runners-up.

This victory was Peru’s first since 1978 and fifth overall in FIFA World Cup finals. The highlight of the game was Paolo Guerrero scoring the second goal, as he was lucky enough to play in the World Cup after a 14 month drug ban was overturned by appeals from the other captains of the group.

For Australia, it was a disappointing end to the tournament. Captain Mile Jedinak shot way over the bar in the first half. Santamaria did excellently to produce a goal-line clearance at the near post after Kruse’s low cross had beaten the keeper.
