Revealed : How Arsenals transfer window went behind the scenes [BBC]

Arsenal

BBC reporter David Ornstein reveals explosive details about what actually happened behind the scenes during Arsenal’s summer transfer window.

According to the BBC’s Ornstein, Arsenal made other clubs and agents aware that Wojciech Szczesny, Olivier Giroud, Jack Wilshere, Mohamed Elneny, Kieran Gibbs, Calum Chambers, Carl Jenkinson, Chuba Akpom and others were all free to leave this summer.

The gunners though ended up only selling Gibbs, Szczesny while sending out Perez and Jenkinson out on loan with Giroud, Wilshere and Elneny staying while Chambers also remained after Wenger changed his mind about him leaving.

In what is being widely viewed as a failed transfer window by pundits, journalists and fans alike after making just two additions to the first team squad, Arsenal are one of only five Premier League clubs to rake in profits from their transfer dealings including selling Alex Oxlade Chamberlain to Liverpool in a deal worth upto £40m.

And now BBC reporter David Ornstein has revealed what Arsenal actually intended to do in the summer and how they have drastically fallen short.

The extent of Arsenals disappointing summer transfer window :

He goes on to reveal how 4 Arsenal players asked Wenger to leave in the summer namely Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez, Shkodran Mustafi and Hector Bellerin.

[spacer height=”30px”]

While only Alex Oxlade Chamberlain managed to move to Liverpool, it is said the Frenchman ‘did not hold back’ when Oxlade-Chamberlain told him face-to-face he wanted to move on.

Meanwhile Hector Bellerin returned from the Under 21s and informed Wenger about his desire to move to Barcelona, Shkodran Mustafi also wished to leave and Arsenal were reportedly happy to comply but as they failed to secure a replacement his wish wasnt fulfilled.

The Gunners also reportedly wanted to keep Lucas and sell Giroud. But Giroud rejected the chance to move instead choosing to stay and fight for his place in the team which meant Perez was allowed to leave albeit on loan.

The BBC reporter also reveals that Arsenal’s inactivity means they have a big budget for the next two transfer windows and that they genuinely believe that they have a chance at the title this year with the squad at their disposal even though they know that they cannot financially compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City and instead choosr to look to Leicester City as their inspiration for being able to win the league with exorbitant spending.

Ornstein adds the Gunners’ attempted business on deadline day suggests they had at least £30m, excluding wages, to use for transfers but could not as their move for Thomas Lemar failed while owner Stan Kroenke, who has come under heavy criticism from fans, is ‘hungrier than ever’ to win trophies but will not put a single penny of his wealth into Arsenals transfer kitty.

A number of the reports made by Ornstein make sense here and indeed does help us get a complete picture about what exactly happened at the Emirates during this window.
