Mourinho Downplays Potential Manchester United Overhaul

Mourinho, Arsedevils, Manchester United

Despite the possibility of finishing second in the Premier League along with the chance to win the FA Cup with a win over Chelsea in the upcoming final, some will still tell you that the 2017-18 Manchester United campaign has been something of a disappointment under the guidance of Mourinho.

A second place finish in the league sounds nice, but there was still a substantial gap between United and rivals Manchester City at the top. As of this writing, City hold a 16-point edge over United despite the fact that the Red Devils came out triumphant in their second and final meeting of the season.

This summer, United and the rest of the top teams in England will obviously try and close the gap with City. United have spent an unreal amount of money since Jose Mourinho was hired in the summer of 2016, but they don’t have much by way of Premier League accomplishments to show for it. Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly, Alexis Sanchez and a host of others haven’t been enough to get Mourinho back to the top.

You can find odds on just about anything with the way football betting has grown in popularity in recent years, but betting on United trying to revamp the squad by spending big money this summer may be a fool’s errand. Rather than spending even more money to try and fix what ails the club, Mourinho has said that he will try and improve the club using a different method.

The Portuguese manager told the English press that his top priority is to find a suitable central midfielder to replace Michael Carrick. Rather than splashing the cash, Mourinho would rather try and improve the players already in the squad ahead of next season.

“We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad. We are going again to touch our squad and believe that more than spend, spend, spend, is probably the evolution of our players. We have some young players that need to get, with both hands, opportunities with their evolution, so let’s see.”

ESPN FC recently reported that some within the club’s brass believes there will be some departures this summer, as well. Defender Matteo Darmian has fallen out of favour with Mourinho, having made just three starts in the Premier League all year. The Italian has already been linked with a move back to Italy, potentially to Juventus. Daley Blind has had injury problems this season, and he hasn’t been particularly impactful when healthy, either.

ESPN additionally reported that Anthony Martial has grown frustrated with a lack of regular playing time since the club acquired Alexis from Arsenal in January. Martial has played well when given the chance this season, as he has scored nine goals along with five assists. He’s made just 17 starts, however, and he may be looking for a way out once the transfer window opens again.

Martial’s agent is reportedly selling other European clubs on the possibility of signing Martial this summer, and ESPN says that Mourinho would not stand in the player’s way if he chose to find a new home.
