South Korea Vs Germany: Biggest Shock Of The Tournament As The Defending Champions Bow Out Of The World Cup In a Humiliating Fashion

South Korea Vs Germany, FIFA World Cup 2018, Russia

Two late South Korean goals have knocked out Germany out of the group stages after yet another bad performance in the South Korea Vs Germany in what will be the shock of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Finishing at the bottom of the Group F, Germany ended their title defense in an embarrassing way.

Germany are the fourth world champion of the last five to go out at the group stage, what is called as the Champions’ Curse as they exit the World Cup in group stages for the first time since 1938.

The score was 0-0 at the end of first half, with both the teams creating a certain amount of chances in front of the goal. Germany enjoyed a big chunk of possession as they always do but already looked rusty in the defense when South Korea counter-attacked in the South Korea Vs Germany match.

The Second half was almost similar to the first with Germany forcing more men forward to get that one goal, South Korea kept counter-attacking and the holders found themselves luck on more than one occasions. Germany had never lost to an Asian opponent before and South Korea broke that record by scoring two goals in stoppage time. One from the corner which needed VAR intervention and one in a very humiliating way when Neuer came forward and was dispossessed in the opponent’s half.

BREAKING Group H | Japan Vs Poland: Confirmed Line ups, Key Players And Team News As Japan Fights For Survival

[spacer height=”20px”]

Here are the five things you need to know from one of the biggest shocks of the tournament’s 88 year-old history:

[spacer height=”20px”]

1. Germany’s Striking Issue

[spacer height=”20px”]

Many were expecting Timo Werner to have an amazing tournament as he was given the striker role for Germany by Low after having an impressive season with RB Leipzeg. But it was a tournament to forget for the 22 year-old forward as he was always pushed to the wings in the closing stages of the game and was replaced by veteran Mario Gomez, who himself could not do much for Germany. With his performances, Liverpool fans have got divided on the opinion of buying the player.

[spacer height=”20px”]

[spacer height=”20px”]

Germany have had some legendary strikers to play for them in the World Cup with the likes of  Gerd Muller, Jurgen Klinsmann and Mirsolav Klose but they haven’t had one like them in this tournament which cost them pretty heavily. A better finisher at the business end and it would have been easy to see Germany go through to the knockout stages.

[spacer height=”20px”]

2. VAR Proves It’s Importance

[spacer height=”20px”]

If VAR was not instigated in this World Cup, maybe Germany would have progressed through to the knockout stages. South Korean centre-back Kim Young-gwon looked to have scored a late goal in stoppage time but the linesman had raised his flag to disallow the goal for offside. The situation was inspected using VAR and the main referee took a look at it himself and it turned out that Kroos had played the ball and not any Korean player and therefore it was given a goal.

[spacer height=”20px”]

[spacer height=”20px”]

The South Korea Vs Germany situation proves that VAR can be very useful when used in a correct way. VAR has already been used for more instances in this World Cup such as in France Vs Australia match and has proven to be very helpful and decisive.

[spacer height=”20px”]

3. Cho Hyun-Woo “Wooed” People’s Hearts

[spacer height=”20px”]

The 26 year-old goalkeeper who plays for Daegu FC in South Korea was outstanding against Germany and only had 9 international caps for South Korea. Cho has already hit the headlines by making some brilliant saves against Sweden in their opening fixture and is one of the hottest properties of South Korea at the moment.

[spacer height=”20px”]

[spacer height=”20px”]

Cho showed quick reflexes and some amazing saves by stopping all the six clean shoots by the Germans. Winning the Man Of The Match in the South Korea Vs Germany game for his performance against the holders, Cho Hyun-Woo has definely put himself in the proverbial shop-window.

[spacer height=”20px”]

4. The Ozil Situation

[spacer height=”20px”]

Many people are criticizing Mesut Ozil and blaming him for the shocking loss against South Korea. The Arsenal play-maker might have had a bad game vs Mexico in their opening fixture but he hardly put a foot wrong in South Korea Vs Germany. The 29 year-old completed 81 passes with 85% accuracy and made more successful dribbles than any other German player. He also created 7 chances and all of them from open play, which is the most by any player so far in this FIFA World Cup.

[spacer height=”20px”]

[spacer height=”20px”]

But since nobody finished one or more of the opportunities, he comes in for criticism. He’s been a bit below par but three poor performances by that team- one of which he did not play in(vs Sweden) concludes that they have bigger problems and Ozil should not be the only person to face all the criticism.

5. What Now For Joachim Low?

[spacer height=”20px”]

Having led to Germany to the semi-finals of every tournament he has managed them in, Low has been Germany’s head coach for more than a decade and has led Germany to three World Cups. After guiding the Die Manschafts to World Cup glory in 2014 as well as in 2017 World Confederation Cup in Russia, he has to convince the DFB that he is the right person to guide them in further tournaments even after this huge disappointment.

[spacer height=”20px”]

[spacer height=”20px”]

Rumors are already started to surface about his resignation  and it will be interesting to know what will happen in the future.

[spacer height=”20px”]

As one of the favourites crash out of this FIFA World Cup, the main talk of the tournament has been about last time winners, unconvincing displays from big teams and some brilliant performances from the underdogs. This World Cup is pretty much open and maybe we could get to see a first time winner.
