Three Significant Points from United’s 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton

The Red Devils defeated the newly promoted side Brighton at home as both teams faced each other in a FA Cup contest at Old Trafford.

Manchester United without Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were able to get the much needed win as they cruised past the visitors at home. It was needful for the club as Mourinho and Brighton manager Chris Hughton deliberated on the touchline during the course of the second half.

At the end, Brighton paid their dues as they were not easily overridden by the host in the course of the contest. Mourinho spoke at the pre-match conference about football heritage taunting fans to be patient and not just emotional and be swayed by the wind of results.

All the same, have Manchester United given their fans all they needed in all competition this season?

[spacer height=”30px”]

This is a big question for the club to answer this season as we take a look at the significant points from the FA Cup triumph over Brighton.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Matic’s Master Class Against Brighton

[spacer height=”30px”]

The Serbian proved his quality and class as he contributed in both goals in the course of the match. This he did setting up big forward Romelu Lukaku with a header for the breakthrough goal of the game.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Matic after the intermission then turned goal scorer as he connected well alongside Romelu Lukaku in the box to power his header beyond the Brighton’s goal following a decent ball into the area from Ashley Young.

[spacer height=”30px”]

This was all United needed as they sealed a vital home win to stand a chance of silverware this term after been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in midweek by Spanish side Sevilla.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Matic’s contribution was evident as he set his teammates up nicely with decent movement on and off the ball especially in the absence of French midfielder Paul Pogba.

United Still Unconvincing

[spacer height=”30px”]

Manchester United might have won 2-0 at home but it is undeniable that the host is lacking some touch of brilliance in the final third. Matic might be good in midfield alongside McTominay but the final third seems to be experiencing some kind of struggle.

[spacer height=”30px”]

This lack of fluency has been evident as Jose’s side had struggled to breakdown oppositions despite the quality on ground. With Juan Mata on the pitch things are meant to be easy as the Spaniard have the ability to make things work in transition.

[spacer height=”30px”]

In the second period United got young talents like Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford coming into the game but Untied could only double their advantage only from the set-pieces.

[spacer height=”30px”]

This might be the bane of the fans agitation and complains as the club continues to grind out result even with the obvious quality (talent) within the United mix.

Chance for Silverware

[spacer height=”30px”]

Manchester United faced a tricky test at home to Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend but thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in each half United was able to pull through.

[spacer height=”30px”]

This offers the host a chance for silverware as they booked their place in the Semi-final of the FA Cup on Saturday. With the Champions League out of their reach after their exit in the hands of Spanish side Sevilla the only route to a trophy this season is from the FA Cup.

[spacer height=”30px”]

This is evident as the Carabao Cup is gone for another season coupled with rivals and neighbours Manchester City’s whose exploits at the top of the Premier League have been undeniably sensational.
