United agree the transfer of Portuguese shot stopper on a Short term Deal

Joel Pereira, Manchester United transfer

Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira has been loaned to Vitoria Setubal in Portugal for a full season. The Portuguese keeper spent his last season as the third choice keeper for United behind Sergio Romero and David de Gea. And after the purchase of Lee Grant from Stoke City, it was likely for this move to happen as his chances of first team football are deemed to be lessened.

The 22-year-old Portuguese was signed by Manchester United in 2012 as a youth player and was later promoted to the senior team in 2015. Since then, Joel Pereira has been loaned to various clubs and featured as a United player in the previous season with only one appearance in a FA Cup match and one start in the Premier League against Crystal Palace.

The Portuguese goalkeeper got his first team experience from Rochdale, where he earned 6 caps while being loaned for a half season in 2015/2016 and at Belenenses in the 2016/17 season with 8 appearances. Joel Pereira was also part of the U-21 Development League Title winning team in 2014/15.

Joel Pereira has been praised by United boss Mourinho several times and he has already been hailed as “the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation” by Jose Mourinho. After this move to Victoria Setubal, the young goalkeeper will be eager to show the boss what he is capable of and surely wants to improve his game to stand in the likes of David de Gea and Sergio Romero.

Joel Pereira told the Manchester United Official Website:

“I’ve been back at United for the last 18 months and the manager showed good faith in me, good trust, I can’t be thankful enough. He wants me to play and I think it’s the right thing for me too, so we’ll see in the next week where I will spend next season. But obviously what I want is to come back mentally stronger and with more experience, more games under my belt, and prove to the manager that the faith he’s put in me is right.”

Pereira played a vital role in the International Champions Cup against AC Milan saving penalties in the shootout. And as a matter of fact, this move is fairly right as the 35 year-old Lee Grant has much more experience and can be used in case of emergency. With Romero being injured, Grant can play a vital role in the squad. It seems like United will have no problem in the goalkeeping department for the whole season.

United have bought only 3 players in this summer transfer window that has only boosted the bench of the Red Devils, which was earlier considered to be quite promising. Moreover, Andres Pereira is back from loan to present more attacking options for Mourinho, who showed his class during the pre-season and is likely to stay at Old Trafford this season.

Although, the current transfer window hasn’t been much of an interesting one for Mourinho, he still wants to sign two more players this season. Mourinho is under great pressure from the board and the fans as it will be his third season at Old Trafford and it has been a while, since the Reds lifted the Premier League trophy. The season kicks off this Friday against Leicester City and it is likely to be missed by some first-team regulars.
