Manchester United Eye Record Breaking €100m Summer Deal For Highly Rated Bundesliga Ace

Dayot Upamecano, Upamecano linked to United

According to German publication Bild, as translated by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have identified French-born RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano as the marquee signing in the summer.

Man Utd are believed to have been closely observing Upamecano’s progress over the recent weeks and now have made him their priority summer transfer target.

Manchester have always been keen to recruit another central defender and the latest player to join the long list of potential transfer targets is Bundesliga’s Dayot Upamecano. The French defender apparently has a €100 million release clause in his current contract according to the report in Bild.

France youth coach Jean-Claude Giuntini said of Upamecano, prior to the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2015, giving a much better insight about what actually could be expected of the young french defender in the years to come by saying:

“He loves defending, getting the ball off opponents,”

“He’s still young and has room for improvement, but he has a great attitude, and a lot of determination.”

However, Dayot Upamecano is a raw talent who’s just 20 years old and is still yet to taste football at the highest level. Upamecano has still not played any international games, and has only represented France in the U-20s.

However, his development at RB Leipzig over the past couple of years has been nothing short of outstanding. He already has 54 Bundesliga appearances to his name despite only having been a part of the first team for two-and-a-half seasons. The question is would he be able to adapt to the style of football in the Premier League?

However, the report also states that Bayern Munich are also keen on a move for the French youth international ahead of the summer transfer window, and if that is indeed the case, then it tends to come across as quite an infuriating challenge when trying to prize away Bundesliga youngsters ahead of the Bavarian giants.

Bayern do indeed have a monopoly over the German top flight and every youngster who rises from it, dreams of playing at the Allianz Arena eventually. Hence, for United to come in and first convince the youngster about a better future in England seems quite a daunting task in itself.

Man Utd might have a potential dilemma on their hands if they eventually have to decide between securing either of Koulibaly and Upamecano. But, would it be ideal to spend €100 million on a raw 20-year-old than an experienced 27-year-old proven central defender. Solskjaer has got a tough task on his hands, if he ends up getting the permanent job at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have struggled defensively, almost at every occasion this season and Solskjaer does not yet know his best centre-back partnership. This leaves room for Dayot Upamecano to come in and make his mark on the team quickly if United do eventually decide to move in for him.
