United Keeping Close Tabs On £26m Italian Superstar From AS Roma

Lorenzo Pellegrini

Manchester United have been looking to sign Italian midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini from Roma since last season and now have increased their interest in him after his recent spectacular performances in Serie A.

United seemed to have been quite enthralled by him last season but the talks failed eventually. He came back to AS Roma from Sassuolo last summer after he played for Roma U-17 and Roma U-19 and then got transferred to Sassuolo.

He played for Sassuolo for two seasons which have proved to be very good learning experience for him playing against the top tier teams of Italy and even qualifying for Europa League. Roma fans were quite excited after the teenager who left after playing for their youth team was coming back home. The 22-year-old struggled a lot in his first season back at Roma playing 30 matches last season and rarely finding some flashes of his form and staying dull with his talent still kept to show to the world.

After the outgoing transfer of midfielders Kevin Strootman and Rajda Naingollan this summer, Pellegrini got the right chance to step up and fetch the regular first team midfield option.

In the beginning of this season too he played some faulty game and got his play time slowly decreasing. But it was not late before Javier Pastore got injured and the derby came up. With four of the seven games from the bench already Pellegrini was brought up as a substitute and then he showed his magic to the world.

He scored a back-heel goal and assisted for one and this is when he began to shine like a star in the eyes of other clubs. He was also impressive in the 3-3 draw against Atalanta earlier this season.

United already has a strong midfield comprising of Pogba, Matic, Fellaini, Herrera, Fred, Pereira and McTominay. And yet it doesn’t make much sense to see manager Jose Mourinho try to sign a midfielder. Pellegrini signed a five year contract just last year and Roma aren’t keen on letting him go after his recent form.

He has release clause in his current contract of £26m which quite frankly makes him a bargain in todays market. Juventus also pursued to sign him but have stopped their interest. Old Trafford is indeed in need of an attacking midfielder like Pellegrini after the witness of recent poor form United is going through. Pellegrini will definitely be an asset for United and will prove to be worthy of fetching them trophies again.
