Manchester United 1-2 Sevilla: Three lessons learned from The Red Devils Ouster in the UCL

Red Devils, Brighton, Brighton vs United, Brighton Mourinho United

The Red Devils were eliminated in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages (Round of 16) no thanks to a brace from Wissam Ben Yedder that came on as a second half substitute.[spacer height=”30px”]

They came into the match as favourite courtesy of their 2-1 home win against rivals Liverpool but it was not to be as they lost 1-2 to Spanish side Sevilla.[spacer height=”30px”]

This leaves the English giants in a dicey scenario as they missed out on the chance to compete at the grandest stages of the Europe elite competition. This will go a long way to hurt the club faithful as some of them might have imagined a possible meeting in the quarter-final with sides like Real Madrid and Juventus.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]

With this 2-1 defeat for the Red Devils, we take a look at the three (major) talking points from the match.[spacer height=”30px”]

The Red Devils are no better than Tottenham[spacer height=”30px”]

Manchester United’s Champions League dreams (aspirations) were cut short by a spirited performance from Spanish side Sevilla at Old Trafford.[spacer height=”30px”]

This was backed a sensational performance from forward Ben Yedder during the 90 minute contest. The Red Devils had their destiny in their own hands but blew it away as Sevilla got two quick goals in the 74th and 77th minute of the match. [spacer height=”30px”]

This forced the host to raise their game as they pulled a goal backed through (big) forward Romelu Lukaku six minutes from time.[spacer height=”30px”]

The English giant were a victim of their own predicament as they secured a draw (though goalless) at Sevilla. This is a similar case to that of fellow English side Tottenham who got kicked out despite tying the first leg with Juventus at 2-2 in Turin.[spacer height=”30px”]

Price of Complacency[spacer height=”30px”]

There is every reason to believe that the host played some level of prank going into this fixture as they were duly stunned by visiting Sevilla side at home.[spacer height=”30px”]

What on earth do United explain (tell) to their fans as they failed to hit the ground running during the first 45 minutes.[spacer height=”30px”]

That was a casual approach from Jose Mourinho’s men as the team (Sevilla) that wanted the game more got what they deserved with a massive 1-2 away win in Manchester.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]
With the plethora of attacking talent like Marcus Rashford (impressive against Liverpool with a brace), Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku, the Red Devils had no genuine reason probably other than complacency not to beat Sevilla at home as they missed a good chance of competing at the latter stages of the Champions League. [spacer height=”30px”]

Mourinho’s Troglodyte approach Fails Again[spacer height=”30px”]

The Charismatic Manager (José Mourinho) has let himself and the club down like before when they hinged their aspiration and focus on the goalless draw (0-0) they achieved away from home in the first leg.[spacer height=”30px”]

This strategy of setting up his side defensively especially in away matches had been the bane of his managerial carrier as this has not produced the best result for his sides in the long run.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]

This deprives (deny) his teams the attacking impetus and fluency needed to ripe opposing sides apart especially with attacking options within the mix.[spacer height=”30px”]

Juan Mata has been sacrificed in this scenario as the Spaniard has found himself on the bench when the cagey occasion (games) arises.[spacer height=”30px”]

Chelsea lost to PSG after a 1-1 draw at Paris only for the gaffer (Jose at Chelsea)to be holding out for a goalless draw at home (Stamford Bridge)to see his team through on away goals rule even when a win is attainable.[spacer height=”30px”]

What kind of strategy and game play is this as this continues to hurt his side with a 1-2 home defeat against Sevilla.
