“Griezmann didn’t feel able to leave Atletico” “He’s been integral to them and has shown his commitment to the club at a time when they couldn’t sign players. Without the Fifa sanctions he would have gone.”
United handed transfer boost on French forward Antoine Griezmann
According to reports in Spain, Manchester United have received a massive boost regarding French forward Antoine Griezmann. Antoine Griezmann joined Atletico Madrid in July 2014 on a six-year contract. He finished the 2014/15 season with a tally of 22 goals. The same season, Griezmann was one of the forwards to be named in La Liga team of the year at the LFP awards and the only Atletico player alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. In June 2016, he signed a contract extension with the Los Rojiblancos which bound him to the club till 2021. Amid speculations of Antoine Griezmann leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the 2016/17 season, he signed another contract extension in June 2017 till 2022. But as the transfer window opened in July, there were widespread tabloid speculations of Antoine Griezmann joining Manchester United. And now according to Spanish news outlet Marca, Antoine Griezmann’s buy-out clause has halved and dropped down to €100m after closure of the transfer window. Atletico Madrid have now reduced the French international’s price after FIFA’s decision to remove their transfer ban in the winter transfer window. The transfer ban was imposed on the La Liga side due to illegal signing of underage players along with Real Madrid who managed to get it lifted after appealing successfully. Antoine Griezmann was reportedly supposed to join Manchester United in this transfer window but the deal collapsed after FIFA upheld Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban. According to a report by the Independent, Griezmann’s former agent Eric Olhats confirmed that Manchester United transfer was a done deal until Atletico’s tarnsfer ban upset everything. Eric Olhats went on to describe how the move broke down saying :
Due to the transfer ban, the forward was reluctant to leave the Rojiblancos in their time of peril. Atletico, in response, lifted his release clause to €200m to ward of possible suiters. When the transfer ban was upheld, Atletico became unable to buy any players heading into their new stadium and Antoine Griezmann was under sudden pressure not to leave Madrid. The French forward personally called the Red Devils to tell his decision to stay at the Vincente Calderon as per the reports by The Independent. After FIFA’s decision to lift the transfer ban and dropping of Antoine Griezmann’s release clause, the Red Devils have now been handed a great opportunity to sign him again as soon as the winter transfer window. Atletico Madrid can now possibly try to find a replacement for their star man with Griezmann possibly poised to join another club in the next window or the next season. With all problems solved, a deal for the forward to join Old Trafford is now not out of question with the release clause still pitched at €100m which is a very small sum going around these days for a playerr of his qualities. But United have a tough task on their hand in trying to prize away one of Europe’s finest forwards and beating the likes of most of the elite teams of Europe. A lot of uncertainty surrounds the future of Antoine Griezmann but if these comments and reports are anything to go by it suggests that United is one of his preferred destinations for when he does decide to leave the Rojiblancos.
