Manchester United began the defence of their League Cup Championship with an impressive win against strugglers Burton Albion on Wednesday.
[spacer height=”30px”]
United won 4-1 against Championship team, second-tier of English football, Burton Albion with a dominant display throughout the match.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Marcus Rashford continued his spectacular start to the 2017/18 season with 2 goals in the first half as United rallied against Championship strugglers Burton Albion.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial completed the scoring for the Red Devils as they marched into the fourth round of the League Cup.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Llyod Dyer put one into the back of the net as a consolation goal for the visitors.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Jose Mourinho made nine changes to the team that played against Everton on Sunday with Rashford starting as lone striker instead of Romelu Lukaku.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Carrick, Herrera, Lingard and Martial all starting for the first team. Sergio Romero started as the goal-keeper.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Here we discuss the five points we learned:
[spacer height=”30px”]
Rashford Revelling
[spacer height=”20px”]
In-spite of the absence of Lukaku, United never looked short of goals against Burton Albion.
[spacer height=”20px”]
With five goals from as many games, Rashford is offering more food for thought for Mourinho and is enjoying a rich vein of form since the start of the season.
[spacer height=”20px”]
With just 17 minutes gone, Rashford scored a double playing as the main man in front.
[spacer height=”20px”]
With Lukaku present, he plays as a wide man on the left wing but enjoyed playing as the lone striker against Burton Albion.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Depth In Squad
[spacer height=”20px”]
Despite the fact that Jose Mourinho made nine changes to the team that played against Everton, United seemed to be in control throughout the match from the first minute.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Ander Herrera and Micheal Carrick were utterly dominant in midfield. Though not being first choice midfield pair for Mourinho, they are eligible to make strong claim to start at Southampton.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Chris Smalling showed great composure at the heart of defence for the Red Devils while Lindelof still has to improve. Both showed assuring performances in the match.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Attacking trio of Martial, Rashford and Lingard were in complete control and flawless with the ball. All three found the back of the net against Burton Albion.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Shaw’s Return
[spacer height=”20px”]
The left-back made a long awaited return to the field after succumbing to an injury in April this year against Swansea.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Luke Shaw’s career at United has been lurched from heartbreak to disaster since he arrived at Old Trafford for £27m from Southampton.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Luke Shaw looked an assuring figure both in attack and defence as soon as he went on the field after the break. He almost scored a goal for the Reds immediately after coming on but was ruled offside.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Shaw made two perfectly timed tackles at the edge of the box to stop a rare Burton Albion attack.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Only 22, Shaw will be hoping for better days but still has much to prove to convince Mourinho of his career at United.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Martial: Assest for United
[spacer height=”20px”]
Manchester United beat Burton quite comfortably on Wednesday. All the players were brilliant especially Anthony Martial.
[spacer height=”20px”]
He played with a sense of swagger and style against a team that was nowhere near his quality. He kept the fans at the edge of their seats all the time.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Martial scored a goal and assisted one that saw him win the Man of the Match. The goal was inconsequential as what mattered was the moments that made the crowd skip.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Martial has been in fine form since the start of the season with 4 goals in 7 matches in all competitions.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Martial’s dazzling display against Burton Albion with all the dribbles and moments of magic will boost his confidence further and strengthen his place in the first team.
[spacer height=”30px”]
Lindelof Needs More Time To Adapt
[spacer height=”20px”]
Victor Lindelof has been unable to prove his price tag so far for the Red Devils.
[spacer height=”20px”]
His play against Championship strugglers Burton Albion was far more good misjudging and missing balls at regular intervals.
[spacer height=”20px”]
Hopefully, Lindelof will improve with time as players of his quality does but there is time to get back to his full stride at Old Trafford.
[spacer height=”20px”]
He needs more time to adapt at United. This is just a rough adaptation period for him.
