Harsh But Inevitable : Why Aaron Ramsey Had To Leave Arsenal Sooner Or Later

Aaron Eamsey, Ramsey, Aaron

We all have a tendency to look back fondly and exaggerate how good things were. There were times when they probably were good for short spells but, any short comings tend to be overlooked or glossed over until they are completely neutralised and only the good remains. This could be the case for Aaron Ramsey, who is about to start a new chapter in his career at Juventus after Arsenal apparently withdrew a contract extension before Ramsey could sign on the dotted line.

Social media has been awash with various comments, both for and against the Welshman who was snapped up for a paltry £5 million from Cardiff in 2008.

In an 11 year career, Ramsey made 369 appearances in Arsenal colours, helping them secure three FA cup trophies in the process.

Aaron was always committed, determined and solid. The ultimate team player without ever becoming a superstar. Someone who could change games and fashion goals through hard work and desire but he isn’t an Arsenal legend, as some have suggested on social media.

In recent years, he had become more of a squad or impact player and at times, it has been difficult for Wenger or Emery to incorporate his style of play in the Arsenal side.

When Emery came to Arsenal, it was suggested that the Spaniard was going to build his team around him but, the truth was that Emery wanted more of a combination of a midfield enforcer and playmaker.

Ramsey’s style is all about darting last minute runs which create panic in defence or his ability to support the attack in the build up play but as an influential midfielder, he falls short.

His contribution has been outstanding and his professionalism in his last season at the club has been nothing short of exemplary.

It’s a pity that Aaron Ramsey will be unable to experience his last game at the Emirates or share his emotions with the fans because of a hamstring injury, typically sustained in the heat of battle against Napoli in the Europa league.

The timing was harsh but Ramsey’s career has been blighted by injury, the worst of which was sustained in 2010, when a he sustained a career threatening injury which sickened supporters. The normally brutal Stoke City we’re fired up for a physical contest by the moron known as Tony Pullis.

The Stoke managers’ excessive demands for aggression resulted in the unforgettable and reckless Ryan Shawcross tackle, that fractured the tibia and fibula in Ramsey’s right leg. The result of the challenge left the limb flapping like a wet sock on a washing line. Aaron was only 19.

Yet the midfielder made a full recovery and even had his best season in 2013-14, where he managed 16 goals and scored the winner in the FA cup against Hull.

Aaron has gone on to become a consistent performer but, it’s worth noting that Ramsey has spent 425 days out injured, missing 121 games in the process which is just over three entire seasons and at the age of 28, injuries become more likely.

The hamstring injury is his seventh year during his time at the club, the last one was in December 2017 which saw him out of action for 29 days and 9 matches.

Despite all the good feeling towards Ramsey from those wanting him to stay, it was time to go.

The only issue is that he leaves for nothing when Arsenal could have got at least £30m for his services had they extended his contract earlier.

I’m sure he’ll seize his chance at Juventus playing alongside Ronaldo. Now that’s a legend by definition.
