Double Deadline Day Deal | What The Double Signing of Tierney and David Luiz Mean For Arsenal

Kieran Tierney, Tierney, Kieran

Arsenal have finally confirmed the signing of Kieran Tierney from Celtic and the surprise arrival of David Luiz from Chelsea on deadline day.

The Scott had been a big target for the Gunners for years but never managed to strike a deal for him. Tierney is highly rated among Scottish football fans and was one of the best prospects they had. The Londoners are lucky to secure his services at just the right time in his career.

The left-back cost Unai Emery‘s side a relatively low sum of £25 million, still somehow making it the biggest Scottish sale of all time. But getting the deal done was not an easy job at all as it took the North Londoners 3 tries to finally find a fair ground. With financial restrictions holding them back, Arsenal’s advancements to structure a deal to be paid in installments was almost ridiculed by people among Celtic camp. The first bid was rejected due to disagreements in installment structure and the second was met with the same result as the Scottish giants wanted a bigger sum upfront.

Nevertheless, a deal has been struck now and it is a very good deal indeed — both financially and in terms of what Tierney could contribute to the team.

The fullback is extremely consistent, he is known for his hunger to drive forward to deliver crosses and shoot for goal; better, he’s good at it too. But what really makes those attributes of his look even more impressive is the defender’s ability to track back, maintain his position and contribute against conceding goals. This makes the Scottish international an all-rounder, as aspect top fullbacks like Trent Alexander-Arnold lacks at.

However, Luiz is the one name stopping Arsenal’s transfer window to be rated a perfect 10/10. There were absolutely no links with him throughout the transfer season, but his name showed up at the 11th hour and has stayed there since. Though his £8 million transfer fee is not a big sum, what he brings to the pitch is far from what the Emirates outfit need.

The Brazilian is extremely good at his distribution having recorded an impressive 88% pass completion rate last season. Unfortunately, that’s where his qualities end. The former Paris Saint-Germain star is known for being error-prone and having lapses of judgement on the pitch often. Not only are his overall defensive abilities just above average, he is known for lacking discipline. Topping things off, he is 32-years-old.

Emery has now been given a 32-year-old defender right after he offloaded a 33-year-old Laurent Koscielny, making things at centre-back absolutely stagnant.

However, if Luiz can offer something till the January window, surely Raul Sanllehi can make something happen and fix this on-going issue at the back.
