Is There Any Truth Behind Arsenal’s Reported Late Chase For Coutinho?

Coutinho, Arsedevils

Arsenal are having one of the craziest transfer windows of their recent history with deals worth over £100 million already being official whilst having a reported budget of just £45 million. And maybe it’s about to get even better as the Gunners are reportedly keen on securing Philippe Coutinho before the conclusion of the transfer window.

So far, the Londoners have managed to land Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano, Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid on loan, Nicolas Pepe from Lille for a club record fee of £72 million and William Saliba from St Etienne. Definitely not bad for a side that apparently were given only a  £45 million kitty. Unai Emery finally has a natural winger in his side alongside a replacement to Aaron Ramsey who left for Juventus on a free. Additionally, a young forward was also added as well as a young defender who will mature well for another year in Ligue 1.

However, a marquee defensive signing seems to be eluding the Emirates outfit. With no news about a which central defender they want and the Kieran Tierney taking too long, tension hasn’t stopped building up. The North Londoners desperately need to sign a defender soon if they wish to have any hope for qualifying for the Champions League next season.

But Arsenal seem to be doing the most Arsenal thing ever and targeting yet another attacker. As per Spanish outlet Sport [via the Sun], Coutinho is someone the English giants want to import this summer on loan. If the reports are to be believed, this deal will contain an obligation to buy the Brazilian at the end of his loan spell for a fee around £27 million. The former Liverpool star has been reportedly regretting his decision to join Barcelona and wants to rejuvenate his career my returning to the Premier League. Barca share the same feelings and believe he is not needed at the Nou Camp and are pushing to offload him to fund a move for Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain according to some reports.

Nevertheless, the rumour seems to be just, well, a rumour. Thinking logically, with Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Alex Iwobi still at the club, a playmaker would be the last thing they want. Especially when it’s clear that the Gunners have brilliant attacking options.

And according to the somewhat reliable Kike Marin, the rumours are completely false, and many seem to agree with him.

Though it is better to note Kike has been wrong on many occasions before. But believing here him wouldn’t necessarily lead anyone astray.

In conclusion, not matter how much Coutinho can improve Arsenal’s attack, fans should be praying the rumours aren’t true and hope the club is focused on signing Tierney and bringing in a centre-back.
