“Once A Gooner, Always A Gooner”? David Alaba Drops Major Arsenal Bombshell

Alaba

David Alaba has set off alarm bells at Arsenal, after revealing his surprising admiration for the club as a little boy.

Alaba graduated from Bayern Munich’s academy and, bar a brief loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim, has been at the club all his career. Having established himself as a regular in the Bavarian club’s starting XI back in 2011, it appears as though he has been around forever. It is easy to forget that he is still only 26 years old and is entering the prime years of his career.

Over the years, he has established himself as one of the best full backs of the modern game with Bayern. While there may not be an inclination or rush to leave his comfort zone, he admits that the prospect of a new challenge is very plausible.

“I can imagine trying something else but I really feel very comfortable at Bayern,” he told Bild.

“Every year there a new challenges and new objectives and the pressure will always be there. I’m happy in Munich but of course I can imagine seeing something else [in the future].”

When questioned about which league he would like to play in, he said:

“Spain, England. In Spain it would be the two big clubs, I guess? Real or Barcelona. Also the big clubs [in England].”

During the interview, Alaba also made a rather surprising admission that will get tongues in North London wagging. The Austrian admitted that he was an Arsenal fan growing up, and in some respects, still is.

He added: “Yes I was [and Arsenal fan as a child]. When you’ve been Arsenal fan as a kid you will be one your whole life in some way.”

Arsenal are worryingly short of options at the back at the moment. The club are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements in the summer and weighing up moves for several potential world class players. Gunners boss Unai Emery is eager to bolster his ranks but is believed to be restricted to a budget of just £40 million. It is unlikely that Alaba will move to the Emirates in the summer, but anything can happen a few years from now.
