Arsenal Amongst the Leading Candidates to Sign €40m Rated La Liga Winger in the Summer

Marco Asensio, Arsenal

As per the latest reports, Arsenal have revived their desire to sign Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio. Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his team’s frontline and the Spanish winger is among the shortlisted candidates he is looking to bring to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

The Real Madrid attacker only has a year left in his contract and no agreement has been reached regarding an extension between the two parties yet. Therefore, he will certainly look forth to exploring his options outside Spain, especially given that he is yet to close in on a decision regarding his future with the Los Blancos.

The North London side were linked with a move for the 26-year-old last summer, but nothing happened. Earlier this month, reports again emerged of the Gunners showing keen interest in signing the winger in the summer. It seems Arsenal are reportedly reviewing the possibility of signing Marco Asensio.

Asensio’s representatives gave a heads-up on his potential move away from the Santiago Bernabeu. In an interview as quoted by Sportmediaset (via Mirror), his entourage claimed that interest is being shown by Italian giants, AC Milan as well as Arsenal. They said:

“The Rossoneri [Milan] are an option even if there are offers from a couple of English clubs, including Arsenal. We are ready to evaluate every option.”

Now, as per Italian publication Calciomercato.it (via Daily Cannon), Arsenal are “clearly” in the running for Marco Asensio and are making concrete moves for a summer transfer. The report states that the Gunners are one of the leading candidates to sign the Spaniard and they have no problem in meeting the player’s wage demands.

As far as the 2021/22 campaign is concerned, Asensio has made just 28 appearances in La Liga and netted only 9 goals (stats via Transfermarkt). His dip in form and wavering performance are likely due to suffering an injury blow.

Real Madrid already has a star-studded frontline consisting of Karim Benzema, Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior, and Lucas Vazquez. Asensio on the other hand is prone to getting less time on the pitch. Thus, it would be healthier for him to search for a club with the chance of playing regular first-team football.

Would The Signing Of Marco Asensio Be Ideal For Arsenal?

Asensio could partner up with Arsenal’s frontmen – Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard. Moreover, with Nicolas Pepe’s future still in limbo at the club, Arteta will have the option of relying on the services of a strong, left-footed right-wing placed forward.

The 26-year-old mostly toggles between the right and left flank on the pitch. Throughout his career, he has been used extensively as a winger. Most often, he is lauded for his finishing, dribbling, and passing ability. With his pace, he is able to outrun his opponents. His long-range shooting is also said to be a valuable asset for the team. His efficiency to carry the ball forward and take shots from a distance could favour Arsenal.

Asensio is also said to be good with his crossing ability. Altogether, he is someone who would go through the opposition’s defence. He is suited to a counter-attacking style of play. Assessing his overall qualities, it is evident that he would deliver excellent performances for the Gunners.

Besides that, Arsenal could be the best spot for Marco Asensio to reconcile his career and flourish once again, the same as his former Los Blancos colleague, Martin Odegaard. Moreover, Arteta will get a like-for-like replacement for Pepe.
