Arsenal Bring Fan Favourite Midfielder Back to the Club | Moment of Great Delight for the Fans

Jack Wilshere, Arsenal

As reported by Sky Sports, Arsenal have brought former England midfielder Jack Wilshere back to the club as a youth coach for their academy. Wilshere, one of the most adored and loved players among the fans, has been appointed as the club’s U-18 head coach after he announced his retirement from professional football.

Wilshere’s career was plagued with injuries and certainly short-lived, having retired at just the age of 30. After spending the first part of the 21/22 season without any club, he joined Danish Superliga club Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF) in February 2022.

The former A.F.C. Bournemouth and West Ham United player saw his contract with AGF retracted on mutual consent after making 14 appearances in his 5-month stint at the club (stats via Transfermarkt) and the player has followed it up by recently announcing his shock retirement from professional football. Wilshere posted on Instagram (via Sky Sports):

“My time at @agffodbold has come to an end. Myself and the club have mutually agreed it’s best for me to move on. I would like to thank everybody at AGF for the support and confidence they gave me from day 1.”

It was first reported by The Evening Standard that Jack Wilshere has held talks with Arsenal academy director Per Mertesacker over two head coach positions – U18s and U23s. The former Arsenal midfielder faced tough competition as he was expected to go up against some highly-rated internal candidates. Nevertheless, he finally got the role of the U-18 head coach.

Jack Wilshere’s Playing Career

Jack Wilshere came in with a lot of promise and hype during his youth days. He made a total of 197 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 14 goals and 30 assists (stats via Transfermarkt). The club fans have some splendid memories of the midfielder, topped by that performance against FC Barcelona and the team goal against Norwich.

He never lacked the technical abilities or the passion for the game. He had a sweet left foot with which he produced good short and long passes on a consistent basis. His ability to drive the ball through the midfield was never in question. However, his career was filled with injuries and disciplinary issues, making him a potential liability to any team.

He could play as a deep-lying playmaker for a team, trying to build from the back. The 30-year-old was especially useful against teams sitting back because of his ability to play in tight spaces and win fouls. But now he embarks on a new chapter in his life, where he will be hoping to pass along his knowledge and expertise to the youngsters.
