Arsenal Complete Astounding Deadline Day Move for €35m Rated Premier League Midfielder

Jorginho, Arsenal

Arsenal have completed a shock move for Jorginho after agreeing a deal on deadline day with Chelsea. The deal took place within a few hours on the January transfer deadline day after the North London side failed in their pursuit of Moises Caicedo.

Jorginho has been one of the key players for Chelsea since joining them in 2018. He has won the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Blues. The 31-year-old was also amongst the frontrunners to win the Ballon d’Or after Italy went on to win the Euro 2020, but fell short of the eventual winner – one of the greatest ever – Lionel Messi.

Arsenal have been looking to strengthen their depth in the midfield department having lost Mohamed Elneny to a knee injury. Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo was their primary choice as an alternative, but the Seagulls knocked down two bids for the player. Hence, the Gunners made an immediate move to sign the Chelsea midfielder.

Arsenal agreed a £12 million deal with Chelsea to sign Jorginho. The deal comprises of a guaranteed fee of £10m with the remaining in add-ons. The Italian became an Arsenal player with just under three hours remaining before the transfer deadline day ended. The Brazilian-born midfielder has signed a 18-month contract till 2024 with an option to extend for one more year.

The partnership of Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka has made it difficult for fellow midfielders like Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga to get into the starting XI regularly. However, Arteta would need to grant them some rest due to the tiring fixture list and field appropriate alternatives.

The Gunners are in prime position to win the Premier League with a 5-point lead over Manchester City and a game in hand. They would not want to lose this golden opportunity to win the league after almost two decades. Arteta wants the right people for the right job. The 31-year-old Italian provides the best backup option and also a new style of play to this side.

Can Jorginho Bring Back His Prime At Arsenal?

Jorginho is a ball-playing midfielder who likes to control the tempo of the game. He likes to be the central point of the team where they can recycle the possession or start their attacks. He also covers either side of the pitch to receive and make short passes. In addition, he likes playing diagonal passes or even long through-balls to spot a runner from the frontline.

Whereas on the other hand, Partey is the kind of player who primarily provides protection to the backline. Distribution of the ball is not his forte, although he is still decent at it. Jorginho can play a crucial role when playing against teams with a low block.

However, the Italy international will first need some sort of confidence-boosting to become a reliable option for Mikel Arteta. The 31-year-old has had a few poor performances which have coincided with the poor run of form for the Blues.

Chelsea are currently stand 10th in the Premier League table and are looking forward to changing their fortunes after this transfer window. Meanwhile, the North London side are currently the league leaders and are in a happy place. Arsenal can be the perfect place for Jorginho to bring his career back on track.
