Out-of-Favour Arsenal Defender has Joined Serie A Side on a Season-long Loan

Pablo Mari, Fenerbahce, Monza

According to confirmed reports, Arsenal defender Pablo Mari has completed his switch to Serie A side AC Monza on a season-long loan.

The Premier League season is upon us but the Gunners have no plans to stop their activities in the transfer market. This includes both incomings for squad reinforcements as well as outgoings of surplus. One player who has recently exited the Emirates is centre-back Pablo Mari.

The Londoners have confirmed eight exits from the club so far. Konstantinos Mavrapanos, Matteo Guendouzi and Bernd Leno have joined VfB Stuttgart, Olympique Marseille and Fulham respectively, on permanent transfers. Striker Alexandre Lacazette returned to Olympique Lyon on a free transfer.

Loan exits include newcomer Auston Trusty, who joined Birmingham City, and Nuno Tavares and Folarin Balogun opting for Marseille and Stade de Reims respectively, for more game time. Mari has now joined this list.

As reported by the Official Arsenal website, Pablo Mari has joined AC Monza for the 2022/23 season on a .year-long ride The Spanish centre-back is Monza’s nineteenth signing of the transfer window. There is an obligation to buy in his loan contract, provided the Serie A side manages to beat the drop.

The recently promoted club wanted to reinforce their defence. It seems they want to be prepared for the Serie A campaign, as they look to avoid any relegation battle at the end of the season.

Pablo Mari first arrived at the Emirates Stadium for a short loan spell from Flamengo in January 2020. His signing was made permanent later in the summer for £14 million. However, getting regular first-team minutes with Arsenal has not been easy for the Spaniard. In his two-and-a-half years with the Gunners, he has played only 22 matches (stats via transfermarkt).

Last season in January, the 28-year-old defender joined Serie A club Udinese on loan, looking for game time. He started 15 league games, scoring two goals to help Le Zebrette finish in 12th position. However, the club did not have the money to sign him on a permanent basis and he returned to London.

Mari joined Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of the pre-season. But with Arsenal transfer-listing him, he knew he needed to find a new club for the current season. The former Manchester City defender still has four years remaining on his Arsenal contract.

He is well aware of the fact that he is out of Arteta’s plans for not only this season but also in the future. The club already has four centre-backs, with Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Rob Holding continuing from last season, and the trio is joined by William Saliba, who comes after a successful loan spell with Marseille.

The 28-year-old got promoted to the Italian top division this season for the first time in their 110-year history. They beat Brescia and Pisa in the promotional play-offs in May. Monza’s spending spree is backed by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who bought the club in 2018 through his holding company Fininvest.

According to reports, Berlusconi has some very weird and strict conditions for Monza’s new signings. These include no beards, no tattoos, no earrings, neatly styled hair, and most importantly, Italian national. Although, this rumour has been negated by the Pablo Mari signing.

With Mari gone, Arteta is now on the lookout for another midfield or winger to add to his squad. The Gunners have started the season in great form, winning both their matches in the Premier League. With the investment that has been put into the squad, Arteta is definitely aiming for the top-four spot in the league, which will guarantee Champions League qualification for next season.
