Arsenal are suddenly a different proposition under Freddie Ljungberg than they were under Unai Emery and Norwich City must be kicking themselves that they didn’t get to play them a week ago, which probably would have guaranteed three vital points.
At that time, confidence had disappeared and disunity was rife. Emery’s departure and Ljungberg’s appointment may cause a sudden spike in the Gunners performance as they experience a less complicated football philosophy that relies on creativity and freedom of expression.
Supporters were looking at the fixture against Norwich City as another drubbing at the hands of one of the Premier League’s new arrivals, but now optimism is replacing the pessimism that has engulfed the club in recent weeks.
If Per Mertesacker, who was appointed academy manager, can take charge of training the defence, as we assume he will, they will have the type of meticulous training that could make them a cohesive unit rather than four incompatible defenders without any ideas or purpose.
Much will rely on this area if Arsenal are to get back on track and Ljungberg will look to his giant German colleague for his opinions and his ability to help him solve the side’s biggest recurring problem.
Norwich City have there own issues and have found the elite league difficult to handle but at least, they have tried to play the style of football that saw them gain promotion.
They are currently third from bottom with only three wins, one draw and nine defeats with a minus fifteen goal difference that suggests Arsenal will get plenty of chances. At the moment, Teemu Pukki is their top scorer with six goals, which indicates that they aren’t able to finish enough of the chances they create.
Arsenal would be well advised to view the game against Norwich City as one which will require a solid performance if they are to take the points. If Norwich were to gain an early advantage, it may have an impact on the Gunners brittle confidence and they could crumble before the second half.
Yet, I imagine that the ‘Freddie Factor’ could fashion a win, if not by a landslide, then at least by a goal advantage but they will have to improve by a thousand percent defensively to achieve that.
Ljungberg has demanded players “play for the shirt !”
We will see if that call to arms gets the right response.
Encouraging Fact:- Norwich City have won just one of their last 15 games against Arsenal and the Gunners have lost only one of their last 14 away games
