Arsenal Prepared to Make a Move for £40m Premier League Striker to Solve Goal-Scoring Issues

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Arsenal

According to The Sun, Arsenal have shortlisted Dominic Calvert-Lewin to solve their crisis in the attacking department. Aubameyang left the club in January to join Barcelona. Meanwhile, both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have their contracts expiring at the end of this season. Therefore, Arsenal are committed to signing two strikers in the summer and Calvert-Lewin has emerged as a new option.

The 25-year-old forward was in his best form while playing under Carlo Ancelotti last season. However, he has struggled to keep up with that form majorly because of the injuries he has suffered. There is no denying that he has the potential to be England’s number 9 in the future but has to find a way out of his injury crisis.

There are no obvious hints whether Frank Lampard sees Calvert-Lewin in his plans or not. The 25-year-old forward has not been a regular starter for Lampard despite recovering from injury. He was amongst the top scorers in the Premier League in his best season and is sure to achieve more with good support.

What Does Dominic Calvert-Lewin Have To Provide Arsenal?

One of the most notable attributes of Calvert-Lewin is his aerial prowess. He is excellent at heading the ball and is lethal while in the opponent box. Everton have relied on his heading abilities quite a few times and he has never disappointed. And that is exactly what Arsenal currently lack now as they don’t have a proper target in the box.

Arsenal will also profit from his presence when they are playing long-balls. Since he is very good at aerial duels, he can win the long balls and quickly create an opening for his team. Most importantly, he also has very good finishing skills. Although Lacazette has lifted his performance in the second half of the season, he hasn’t scored many goals and Calvert-Lewin can change that.

Calvert-Lewin scored 21 goals in the 2020/21 season in all competitions. He was also ranked sixth amongst the Premier League top scorers with 16 goals (stats via whoscored). He can do even more if he plays in a team with better supplies and better players around him. Arsenal are currently running riot and if they keep up that form then Calvert-Lewin can also be a huge success at Arsenal.

Should The Gunners Make Calvert-Lewin Their Primary Target In The Summer?

As it has been already established, Arsenal want to sign two strikers in the summer and a combination of a seasoned striker along with a young striker could be the way to go. Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be the backup striker at Arsenal as he still has a lot to provide. He can play the occasional games for Arsenal and be a tough competition for their first choice striker whoever it may be.

Defenders will try to be more alert with Calvert-Lewin in crossing situations. Arsenal do have Lacazette and Nketiah but neither of them provides the aerial threat that Calvert-Lewin possesses. This will help Arsenal to get a free man inside the box or just outside the box. Not only does he score with his head but also is a good finisher with his feet.

He just has to improve his passing and the ability to hold on to the ball. Arsenal can even use him alongside a strike partner, that is, in a formation with two centre-forwards. However, the 25-year-old forward has to find a way to get rid of his injury crisis. He has to get regular game time to get back in form and surpass his personal best of scoring 21 goals in a season.
