Fans are Looking for Arsenal to Reinforce its Defence when the January Transfer Window Opens

Arsenal, gunners transfer news, Arsenal transfer window, transfer window

Trouble and Arsenal seem inseparable and they have had a strange relationship for sometime now. There’s no other club that generates such dramatic and chaotic headlines in the premier league and one recurring feature is Arsenal’s inadequate defence, which has been an ongoing problem for over a decade.

Each year around December, there’s a crisis born out of absences and injuries and it appears that no one can resolve it. Wenger and Emery couldn’t, the Arsenal board wouldn’t and the Kroenkes didn’t. So here we are again approaching Christmas with more injuries to its defensive unit with Holding, Bellerin and Tierney absent.

The transfer window is looming and it’s not a case of spending to keep the fans happy, there is a genuine need to reinforce at the back, regardless of whether a new coach is in place or not, which I suspect he might be.

It’s not like the manager identifies the players anyway because Unai Emery got what he was given from ‘Don’ Raul at Arsenal.

Raul Sanllehi, Head of football at Arsenal, is not a fan of the winter transfer window but his words will certainly be used against him if he fails to secure defensive cover. In October 2018 he said,

“I don’t believe much in the winter window. There are exceptions. But if you have the right planification [sic] in the summer and the team are performing at the level you expect, you should not go to that window or try to avoid it”

He added,

“It’s there for emergencies, a big injury or if something is really not working and you need to recover there. I give much more importance to the summer windows.”

Arsenal will indeed be spending if Sanllehi is to be believed because the defence is an emergency due to injury but mainly due to it being simply woeful.

If this Arsenal season’s failure is down to anything it’s the failure to secure a decent, non injured, non loaned out defence and on reflection one feels desperately sorry for Emery who was never to be the master of his own destiny.

If there’s any common sense left at the Emirates, they will be calling the agents of various quality defenders and asking about their availability.

No excuses about the transfer window this time, if Arsenal are to salvage something from this season they will have to splash the cash that perhaps they should have in the summer.
