First Transfer Sorted? Arsenal Agree Terms With The ‘Next Raphael Varane’

William Saliba, William Saliba linked to Arsenal

Arsenal may have finally made their first signing of the summer as they have reportedly agreed terms with William Saliba.

The Frenchman had a breakthrough campaign last season with Saint-Etienne. Saliba turned out to be one of the best defensive prospects from France to gain fame last season, and deservedly so. If regulars of Ligue 1 are to be believed, the youngster could be the ‘next Raphael Varane.’

Which is exactly why the Gunners have been working tirelessly to get him to the Emirates. Rumours of a possible move to North London surfaces weeks ago and seems like the work done between those weeks have finally played off.

According to Foot Mercato, Unai Emery’s side and the Saint-Etienne man have agreed terms on a 5-year deal and all that’s left of the ordeal is to work out the details and finances between the two clubs.

Moreover, Manchester City were also reported to be interested in the young centre-back and beating them to this signing is a great plus side.

Emery did not have an amazing set of defensive options last season when the injuries rolled in; despite having signed only defensive players last summer. Which was probably a mistake from his part for over-playing and over-working certain players in a work-rate based system.

Nevertheless, Shkodran Mustafi turned out to be unreliable unsurprisingly and Laurent Koscielny is aging. It wasn’t long before it became apparent that Sokratis Paspastathopoulos needed backup, especially with Rob Holding just recovering from a long-term injury.

Another Example Of How Arsenal Are Killing Their Academy System And Youth Players By Doing This

This is where the French U-19 international comes in to fill the gaps. If the part about his arrival being on a 5-year deal is true, then it can also prove to be an amazing investment and long-term servant for the club.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old’s sheer height will allow him to dominate aerial battles of the Premier League as well as handle its physicality. The defender’s ball playing ability is no joke either.

If all goes to plan and the Londoners managed to land this one on the lighter side of their transfer budget, it could turn out to be a great asset for them.
