Done Deal: Arsenal Set to Make First Signing of the Summer as Club Reach Full Agreement With Sao Paulo to Sign Starlet

Marquinhos, Arsenal, Wolves

Latest reports suggest Arsenal are now set to make Sao Paulo youngster Marquinhos their first signing for the new season. Arsenal have been planning for the summer signings ever since their failure in the January window and their efforts seem to have given them the desired result in the case of the Brazilian forward.

Arsenal are looking to bolster their attack this summer, having covered their defensive base last summer. The club’s priority is to sign a striker and a wide player, with Nicolas Pepe’s future uncertain at the Emirates. With Gabriel Jesus being targeted for the striker position, Edu and the board seem to have decided to bet on Brazilian young talent Marquinhos for the second forward option.

Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte (via Metro) reported last week that Arsenal had submitted a £3million bid for Marquinhos and the fee has been accepted by his club, Sao Paulo. Talks between the two clubs progressed very quickly and the deal could be completed before June itself.

Now, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (via Metro), Arsenal have reached full agreement with the Brazilian club to sign Marquinhos for a €3.5m fee. The winger has agreed to five-year contract running till 2027. The final deal will be signed once the player completes his medical.

The Brazilian is available for such a low price after FIFA judged that the five-year deal he signed in 2019 was actually valid for just three years – the maximum length a player can sign in his first professional agreement. However, Sao Paulo did not want to lose him so early and offered to extend his contract but the 19-year-old turned down renewal offers. Other clubs such as Wolverhampton and Atletico Madrid were also believed to be keeping tabs on the teenager, but Arsenal made the quickest move.

Marquinhos had 21 league appearances last season, with just five starts, and had one assist to his name (stats via Transfermarkt). This season, the 19-year-old attacker has only played in one league game, but has appeared in 16 games across all competitions and has registered 3 goals and 1 assist.

The Gunners know the fascination Edu has with signing young talents from the land of Jogo Bonito. Arsenal signed Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano and agreed on a cut-price fee for Pablo Mari with Flamengo. Marquinhos would not feel isolated in Mikel Arteta’s squad, with Martinelli and Gabriel already from his homeland, and Arsenal looking to bring in Jesus from Manchester City.

However, it seems difficult that the player would go straight into the first-team squad of Arteta. Rather, this could be considered as a developmental signing and Marquinhos will gradually progress into the first-team.
