Three Premier League clubs including Arsenal have made contact with Barcelona over a possible move for Memphis Depay. This is according to the Spanish outlet Superdeporte (via The Sun) which reports that the other two clubs are Newcastle United and Everton who are also keeping their tabs open for the Dutchman. The 28-year-old forward spent one and a half years in the Premier League with Manchester United where he was not as successful.

However, Depay proved to be very good after moving to the French club, Lyon. He was also a very important part of his national team when they were going through a transition phase. He made 178 appearances for Lyon while finding the back of the net 76 times and also assisting 55 goals (stats via Transfermarkt). Such impressive performance led to Barcelona making a move and sealing a deal for the Dutchman last summer.

He enjoyed a fairly decent first half of the season at Barcelona under Ronald Koeman. However, things changed after Xavi took control and Depay has been out of favour ever since. Barcelona have bounced back and currently looks like a serious threat in Europe. Meanwhile, Depay has had very little contribution to this resurgence.

Why Is Arsenal Keen On Bringing Memphis Depay Back To The Premier League?

Although Memphis Depay started as a left-winger, he can also play as a centre-forward. He has majorly played as a centre-forward in recent years for both Lyon and Barcelona. Arsenal are facing issues with getting a proper number 9 after Aubameyang left to join Depay at Barcelona in January. Whereas both Lacazette and Nketiah have contracts expiring at the end of this season.

Even though Memphis Depay plays as a striker, he has very good creative abilities. Set-piece delivery and key passes are one of his strongest attributes. That is largely helpful for Arsenal considering the job Lacazette has done in the second half of the season. He has not found the back of the net that often but has been heavily involved in playmaking for Arsenal.

Depay is also very good at dribbling, letting him draw fouls from the opposition players. If the free kick is within range then Depay does have a good chance of scoring directly since he is also brilliant at taking long shots. The Dutchman can also hold the ball to bring his teammates into the game. He uses his passing skills to release a player on the run.

Will Depay Succeed In The Premier League After A Disappointing Stint In England Previously?

Since Xavi does not see Memphis Depay in his plans, there is no chance he will get starts at Barcelona. So Depay will not be happy at the club. This might result in a performance drop and Depay could think of a move away from Camp Nou. Out of all the three Premier League clubs who have contacted Barcelona for Depay, Arsenal are the most lucrative side for the Dutchman.

Arsenal have improved a lot from their past two seasons and are the favourites to finish fourth in the league. A place in the Champions League could lure Depay for a move to England. Depay looks more confident and could play more freely at Arsenal than at Barcelona. He will be allowed to express himself more under Arteta resulting in more productivity from the Dutchman.
