Arsenal Express Interest in West Brom Youngster, but Will Face Competition From Multiple Clubs

Reyes Cleary

According to the latest reports, Arsenal are interested in signing West Bromwich Albion’s U18 forward Reyes Cleary. The 17-year-old has attracted interest from quite a few Premier League clubs while German giants Bayern Munich are also monitoring his growth.

The Gunners are facing a striker shortage after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club to join Barcelona on the deadline day of the winter transfer window. The North London side also allowed Hale End product Folarin Balogun to leave on a six-month loan in January.

At the moment, Arsenal just have Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as centre-forwards in their squad. However, both the players have contracts expiring at the end of the season with no talks of renewal whatsoever. Arteta and Edu are actively looking at strikers to sign in the summer transfer window and Cleary does look like an option for the future.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are looking to sign West Brom youngster Reyes Cleary in the summer. The Baggies have offered Cleary a professional contract, but he is yet to sign the deal. However, the Gunners are not the only Premier League club after his signature.

Southampton, Newcastle United and Everton have all expressed interest in the Baggies youth prospect. The youngster has also attracted attention from outside England, with Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Salzburg also monitoring his growth.

Although Reyes Cleary may not be a first-team option immediately, he could still be a long term option for the club. Reyes Cleary has certainly shown his finishing skills and is comfortable using both feet. This could help Arsenal in the cup matches as they need the depth to compete in all competitions next season.

Moreover, if the English youngster is able to keep up with the expectations, then he would be an even cheaper option than the other players available. He will provide pace and physicality to the Gunners’ frontline. They have been lacking a strong and physical regular goal-scoring striker for a long time and Reyes Cleary could certainly provide that.

The young forward has already scored 30 goals in 40 appearances in his time at West Brom. This season alone, he has 22 goals in as many games and is just a 17-year-old. This amount of goals at his age does grab the scouts’ attention and certainly suggests he is ready to play at a higher level.

Reyes Cleary most recently scored two goals last Monday against QPR as West Brom won the game 4-2 and knocked the opponents out of the Premier League Cup. He blasted the net with his first strike from inside the box using his left foot while his curling effort with his right foot for his second proved enough for the Baggies to go through.

Cleary’s physique and pace allow him to dominate defenders or get away from them. Moreover, his finishing skills with both the right and left foot confuses goalkeepers as to which way he will be going. The main advantage of signing Reyes Cleary is his young age. He has a lot of potential and has plenty of time on his side. Managers can mould him into a target man or a pacey striker, whichever suits them best.

Mikel Arteta has made his reputation of improving the youngsters and making them first-team players. He has done so with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe. The Spanish manager can replicate that with the West Brom forward and get the best out of him.

The young striker will need some top-flight experience to explode into life. He might need some time to settle down and be comfortable with the Premier League. But, that won’t be a problem at Arsenal as he will have all the youngsters surrounding him who could help him settle down easily.

If Arsenal can bring him in and train him accordingly, it won’t take much time before Reyes Cleary starts scoring 30 goals each season even at the highest level. Nevertheless, the Gunners will have to face some tough competition to secure his signature.
