How Arsenal’s January Transfer Business Provides Indications to Their Summer Transfer Plans

Arsenal are being praised for their transfer activity in January which included shipping out players that have been stealing a living for some time. Yes, it’s been positive to remove their wages and free up some cash but let’s not get carried away, we have lost money on a majority of deals and who knows what it cost to divorce Mesut Ozil.

This window depends on your perspective and whether you consider loan deals value for money but just to balance any argument, Manchester United didn’t bring any players in. One of the world’s biggest clubs have been significantly impacted by the pandemic, so Arsenal appear to be in good company.

Premier League Champions Liverpool managed to top up at the back with the arrivals of Ozak Kabak (loan) and Ben Davis, but not many other high profile clubs made significant last-minute moves. As I blogged last summer, Arsenal were at the forefront of the loan deal explosion and we’ve seen a great many clubs join that particular trend.

So what do we make of this window? My own view is that we covered two key areas that needed our immediate attention but there is still no recognised cover for Tierney at left-back. That implies that Arsenal had limited cash and that Arteta believes Cedric is the answer until the summer. The Spaniard could regret that decision if anything happens to his Tierney’s makeshift replacement.

It’s not perhaps the transfer window we would have liked, but it’s probably what we could manage and needed, which isn’t exactly going to set pulses racing. Who knows, perhaps we will look back at this transfer window and claim it was one of the better ones if Arsenal manage to get a top-four slot and go deep into the Europa League.

That’s when Arsenal’s January transfer activity can be judged properly but for now, it’s okay, no more than that. At least financially, Arsenal will be able to breathe with the excessive incomes of Ozil, Sokratis, Kolasinac, and Mustafi all missing from the books.
