Arsenal are reportedly keen to land Miralem Pjanic from Barcelona this summer

Miralem Pjanic’s switch from Turin to Barcelona has not worked out for any party. The 30-year-old signed for the Spanish giants in a four-year deal in a swap deal involving Arthur. last summer.

However, the midfielder has struggled to nail down a place in the team, with Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Frenkie De Jong all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Thus the former Juventus man, who only started six games for Barcelona last campaign, is hoping to force his way out of Camp Nou.

Several clubs have been alerted of the situation, with SportWitness claiming Arsenal have started negotiations with the player’s camp, alongside Juventus, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Pjanic reportedly does not want to join up with Barca for the preseason

Arsenal’s pursuit for an experienced ball-playing central midfielder has been well documented since Granit Xhaka’s move to Roma reached advanced stages. The Gunners are willing to do a loan deal with The Blaugrana in the current shop window.

Although the North London Outfit’s chase of Anderlecht’s Albert Sambi Lokonga looks to have reached the final stages, the Belgian is believed to be a player for the future.

The SportWitness report further suggested:

Everything indicates’ Miralem Pjanić will go out on loan and the Gunners are one of the interested parties ‘already negotiating’ for his signing.’

With Xhaka’s move away from the Emirates Stadium imminent, adding a player of Pjanic’s caliber although appears rational but is short-sighted.

Miralem Pjanic interest seems short-sighted

Regardless, signing the Bosnian won’t be straightforward. First of all, the player’s first preference remains his former club Juventus. Second, Arsenal have to fight it out with Premier League rivals Tottenham and Chelsea for Pjanic’s signature, which won’t be easy with the Gunners having missed out on European football altogether.

To be honest, Miralem Pjanic is not a signing that intrigues me. Although he was in the Serie A Team of the Season consecutively from 2015 to 2019, the 31-year-old has been on a clear decline in the past two years.

The Nuno Tavares and Sambi Lokonga deals felt refreshing due to their age and the potential ceiling for improvement. And it’s clear that The Gunners need to do away with the ‘Stop-Gap FC’ tag by signing players who are reaching the twilight of their respective careers.

Too many mistakes have been made in the past, for the Arsenal board to not know that acquiring the services of players in their 30s does not guarantee you immediate success.

I would rather be pushing for players such as Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli, who have a good 5-8 peak years left in their careers.
