Arsenal are reportedly in talks with Freiburg over the possibility of signing young defender Caglar Soyuncu in the summer.
Soyuncu, 21, has made 47 appearances for Freiburg since joining the club back in 2016 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most sought after centre backs in the Bundesliga already. Having made more than 30 appearances for Altinordu S.K, a second division team in the Turkish League, Caglar Soyuncu secured a move to Freiburg in 2016 amid Sevilla and Besiktas also competing for the players signature.[spacer height=”30px”]
After initially struggling at his new club and conceding two penalties in his first two months, Soyuncu went on to gradually establish himself in the first team and is now considered as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga.[spacer height=”30px”]
The 21 year old defender’s progress has certainly not gone unnoticed with Sven Mislintat the now Arsenal head of recruitment reportedly well aware of his abilities and potential and now possibly weighing up a summer bid for the Turkish International according to the Daily Mail [spacer height=”30px”]
Arsenal have reportedly kept tabs on him this season and have reportedly scouted him on a number of occasions most recently during Turkey’s 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland last week. The 6ft2 defender is quite dominant physically and his strong performances this season have also drawn interest from a number of other Premier League clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea according to the German press.[spacer height=”30px”]
Simon Jones of the Daily mail has even gone on to liken the Turkish defender to a young Mats Hummels. His aerial prowess and good ball retention are quite appreciable and his best strength is apparently his quick recovery and and speed over short distances.[spacer height=”30px”]
The defender has already become a mainstay at the heart of the Freiburg defense this season, making 21 appearances for the Bundesliga team. His incredible rise from the Turkish second division to one of the consistent performers in the Bundesliga has been quite extraordinary and has even drawn praise from the Turkish Football official twitter account.[spacer height=”30px”]
I have been very impressed with Caglar Soyuncu's development. The 20-y/o has gone from 2nd tier Turkish football to be a Bundesliga starter

Arsenal are in dire need of reinforcements at the back with Captain Per Mertesacker officially retiring to take over the Arsenal academy and with vice captain Laurent Koscielny already 32 and struggling with an frustrating and permanent Achilles injury. Despite having Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and the newly arrived Kostantinos Mavropanos in their ranks, doubts over their quality and ability in becoming the first choice centre backs is prevalent and the addition of a commanding young center back could well be the best solution here if Arsenal do choose to keep their faith and sign another young center back.[spacer height=”30px”]
However a player of his quality will certainly not be cheap for a Premier League club and a valuation of £30 million is already being touted on the cards as the sum which will apparently convince the Bundesliga club to part ways with their prized asset though it is very much doubtful whether Arsenal will indeed spend that much on such an young player.[spacer height=”30px”]
More in this will gradually be revealed as the season draws to a close and the transfer window reopens.
