Arsenal Closely Monitoring €80m Rated Former Premier League Striker, Player Refuses to Rule Out Potential Move

Tammy Abraham, Arsenal

Recent reports suggest Arsenal are keeping an eye on AS Roma’s in-form striker Tammy Abraham. In a recent conversation, Abraham has revealed that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of leaving the Serie A side, come the end of the season but is happy with his progress at the club.

The 24-year-old has expressed his glee at being the star of the show at his club in Italy. Abraham has scored 24 goals across all competitions (stats from Transfermarkt) this season, breaking David Batistuta’s record of the highest-scoring debut season at Roma.

The young striker had faced a lack of playing time at his previous club, Chelsea, having graduated from their academy. Usually playing second fiddle to the other strikers at Stamford Bridge, the Englishman decided to take a leap of faith and materialised his move to the Italian club.

According to Football London, Arsenal are interested in securing the services of Tammy Abraham and are closely monitoring the player. The Gunners tried to sign him last summer, having witnessed his dissatisfaction at Chelsea, but a move failed to materislise due to funds.

The North London side are looking to sign at least one forward this summer and the Roma striker is among the shortlisted candidates alongside Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal are involved in talks with Jesus’ representatives over a move. While the Abraham links aren’t as solidified as with the Brazilian, a re-ignition of interest is not off the charts.

Meanwhile, in an interview with ESPN Brazil, Arsenal technical director Edu Gasper expressed his excitement regarding the club’s summer plans. He said:

“The budget we used last summer, we prefer to use it to rebalance the squad, there was no point in hiring one or two players [in January], the squad was not prepared to absorb two players, we needed to rebalance the squad. Maybe next season we can go to one or two players.”

“Today we find a much more balanced squad. Our planning has already been done, it has already reached the owners. It’s a matter of step by step, how we are going to finish the season and to put in plan the planning that I’m very excited about.”

However, Roma’s asking price for the 24-year-old is likely to scare away potential suitors. The Italian club have slapped a price tag of €80million on the striker, the same price at which Chelsea can bring him back, having inserted an €80million buy-back clause in the player’s contract.

Although he has insisted being happy at Roma, playing regular first-team football, Tammy Abraham has refused to rule out a potential move to Arsenal this summer. When asked about his future, he said:

“For me to be doing what I’m doing now for a great club like Roma, I can’t really describe the feeling. Coming off the back of a difficult season at Chelsea where I wasn’t really playing games, coming here and shining, it’s like a dream come true for me.”

“I’m happy playing my football. Of course, you hear the little rumours here and there, different people interested, clearly for me I’m doing the right thing if people are watching.”

“I just have to stay focused, keep doing my thing, keep playing my football, focus on this competition, where we finish in the league, and we’ll see what happens in the future.”

It remains to be seen where the former Chelsea man will end up after the end of the season. He has been immense and has made an immediate impact at Roma. If Arsenal fail to sign Jesus, Tammy Abraham can be a good alternative as a marquee signing.

The Gunners have been struggling in the forward department this season. With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah close to the exit door, they need at least 2 quality strikers to challenge for trophies. Moreover, with Champions League football almost confirmed for next season, they would require a much larger squad.
