Arsenal’s Decision to Offer Contract Extension To Two Key Wantaway Stars Has Left The Entire Fanbase Divided

Granit Xhaka, Hector Bellerin

According to reports, Arsenal looking to extend the contracts of Granit Xhaka and Hector Bellerin After the arrival of Ben White, Arsenal are hopeful of tying down Xhaka and Bellerin, as suitors have failed to meet their asking price. At one stage, both looked destined to depart the Emirates Stadium and the club were open to let them leave if they had received a reasonable offer.

Despite Granit Xhaka helping Switzerland reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship, Serie A club AS Roma have not improved their second offer of £12+3m. Arsenal weighed the pros and cons between him leaving North London for a nominal fee and him staying for at least a few more years. It is believed that the Gunners see the latter option as the better one. The Swiss will pen fresh terms and his new deal will keep him at Arsenal until the summer of 2025.

Whereas in Bellerin’s case, Inter Milan would like to purchase him on a season-long loan deal, with the option of making the move permanent next summer. The Spaniard’s representatives met technical director Edu this week, and the former Arsenal Invincible made it clear to them that he and the club want to extend his deal beyond 2023.

Thus, it will protect Bellerin’s value, even if the Italian champions don’t trigger the option to buy him next summer. This might end up being a shrewd piece of business from the North London outfit. It is no secret that the current market is a suppressed one and everyone wants to spend the least possible fee on fresh recruits.

Extending the contracts of Xhaka and Bellerin and then moving them on in a year or two when the market is better financially would be a good decision.

Although it will receive backlash from some sections of the fanbase, the club should not just limit their thinking to the short-term. If the club wants to be “self-sustainable”, they have to take harsh decisions in the hope that they will reap rewards in the future.

Personal Viewpoint: If I had some standing among Arsenal fans, I would have tried to make the point that not everything should be a “quick fix.” Selling Xhaka and Bellerin at the moment, when clubs across Europe have been hit hard financially due to the pandemic, would be short-sighted.

Arsenal have already made countless mistakes in the past of not extending the contracts of influential players at the right time. They have also not sold several players at the right time when their market value was at its peak.

Six months before Alexis Sanchez left for free, the Gunners rejected a £60m offer from Manchester City. Six months before Henrikh Mkhitaryan left for free, Arsenal rejected a £10m offer from Roma. They need to find a balance, and I can notice that gradually they are reaching there.
