REVEALED | Full Extent of Arsenal’s Pathetic Transfer Dealings That Have Led to This Situation

Aaron Ramsey is the latest ‘big player’ to depart from Arsenal over a space of two years. Arsenal want 20 million pounds for the Welshman but are finding it tough to negotiate a deal with the Italians who are willing to pay only 10 million pounds. This leads to the question, why Arsenal are repeatedly failing to get decent transfer amount for their players?

Since Mesut Ozil’s arrival, Arsenal have spent 378 million pounds on transfer fees. But the real problem that has been affecting the club all these years have been a lack of excellent ‘value for money’ signings.

In the current Arsenal squad, it could be said that Aubameyang, Lacazette and Rob Holding are the only signings that have proved to be a real bargain.

However, this sums up only one part of the issue. More worrying is the club’s poor record at getting profitable deals for their outgoing players.

The club is ranked the worst side out of the ‘big six’ at getting profits out of player sales over the last five and a half years. In this particular period, twenty eight players including Andrei Arshavin, Marouane Chamakh, Gervinho, Lukas Fabianski, Denilson, Lukas Podolski, Tomas Rosicky, Serge Gnarby, Abou Diaby, Wojciech Szczesny and Oliver Giroud were sold by the club.

The total transfer money recouped by Arsenal from the sale of all the twenty eight players just comes to 77 million pounds. This means that every single player went for a lower fee than what was received for Kolo Toure’s and Thomas Vermaelen’s transfers.

Added to this is the club’s failure to get good transfer fees for it’s homegrown players. This is baffling as homegrown players are normally paid a high premium on any transfer fees when they are sold to other Premier League clubs.

Furthermore, sacrificing Alexis Sanchez for less than 80 million pounds and many other players who are outside the first team squad to leave for a penny, it can’t get any uglier. The transfer mismanagement is sure to have deprived the club of at least 150-250 million pounds. Imagine if Arsenal had this much amount in their hands now. It would have been more than enough for Unai Emery to make the required signings in the January market.

What worsens the mood is seeing what other Premier League sides like Liverpool are getting out of selling mediocre players. Recently, Dominic Solanke was sold by Liverpool for 19 million pounds which saw the club raking in a 15 million pound profit.

That too for a player who has just one goal this season. Similarly, Tottenham got 20 million pounds by selling Kevin Wimmer to Stoke City.

What Arsenal recouped for Szczesny, a player with 40 caps and 300 European appearances was almost obtained by Man City for Angus Gunn, who has zero top flight appearances.

Part of the reason is the club’s ineffectiveness in dealing with their players as normally it comes to a situation where players dictate their future at the club. This has resulted in the club suffering huge loses.

This is still happening even after the Robin Van Persie and Samir Nasri episodes. Oxlade Chamberlain was allowed to leave in the same fashion for 40 million pounds.

Taking previous transfers into account, Arsenal have been gone from being the top producer of home grown talents to the last among the ‘Big Six’ along with Man city. Arsenal’s failure with contracts became more profound after Nasri and Van Persie departures.

The club had always faced a difficulty in seeing out player contracts due to a lack of financial muscle. The reality is Arsenal is not on the same solid ground as Manchester United, Bayern Munich, PSG or Barcelona appears to be on.

Hence, it becomes even more vital that they try to get the most out of their assets. An ideal example to follow would be Tottenham, who are doing quite well in the league despite their tight finances. The lack of transfer funds has hindered the new manager’s ability to add to the squad which will ultimately decide the fate of the team this season.
