Arsenal are reportedly in the race to sign Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella as they begin to eye a replacement for the departing Aaron Ramsey in the summer. Reports in Italy suggests that Chelsea’s interest in the talented Italian have petered out. Football Italia has reported that Arsenal have now entered the battle to sign the midfielder amid interest from Napoli and have reportedly shown ‘greater interest’.
However, Metro reports suggest that Chelsea remain the front-runners for getting the Italian ace in the January market. The same report claims that Arsenal remain interested in the 21 year old, but will only make a move for the player in summer.
Latest On Arsenal:
The reason behind this decision is mainly due to the lack of transfer funds available in January which will be used to meet the 20 million pound asking price of Dennis Suarez.
Earlier in December, there were reports about Arsenal scouting the Italian. However, the Cagliari President brushed aside those rumors by claiming that Nicolo Barella was happy at the club and will not move in January. President Tommaso Giulini said:
“It’s been like this for months. I believe it’s only right that we enjoy him for as long as he’s here with us. If things change then we’ll announce it, but he’s very happy here and the club no intention of selling him.”
“I hope he stays with us for a long time and certainly, like I’ve already said before, he won’t leave in January.”
Italian football Journalist David Amoyal had earlier stressed that Barella’s improvement in form this season was down to more game time.
Great development for Italian national team that Barella stayed at Cagliari this season so he can play regularly in a place where he’s comfortable. Let’s add him to list of players Mancini needs to focus on

In his debut season at Cagliari, Nicolo Barella made 34 appearances and has been the creative fulcrum of the team this season too. The Italian is renowned for his calmness, versatility and intelligence on the playing filed.
He also is a player who apart from making intricate passes is never shy of taking chances from outside the box. The Cagliari star is particularly fond of physical battles and uses his body to fend off challenges. This makes Nicolo Barella better suited for playing in a physically demanding environment such as the Premier League.
Unai Emery will be hoping that the player decides to stay at Cagliari till the end of the season so that Arsenal could swoop in for him in the summer transfer window. The Arsenal fans have to hold their breath for now as Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea look for a Cesc Fabregas replacement.
