Arsenal vs Southampton: Welbeck scores a brace as we discuss the Talking Points

Welbeck, Arsedevils, Arsenal, Arsenal Vs Southampton, Mohamed Elneny

Arsenal extended their winning streak by defeating Southampton 3-2 at the Emirates on the back pf Welbeck’s brace. This comes after their shocking defeat against Brighton in March. After which the team has shown some improved performances by winning six games in a row.

Thanks to goals from Aubameyang and Danny Welbeck, Arsenal saw through the Southampton threat. It’s quite essential that the team maintains the winning spirit going into the business end of the season.

Here are a few talking points from the game:

[spacer height=”30px”]

All eyes set to Russia… Or not!

1.The Strike Force Awakens….featuring Iwobi-wan-Kenobi

[spacer height=”30px”]

Game after game it’s the Gabonese man who always nets the goal for Gunners. He has been directly involved in seven goals in as many games. His pace and precision has made him a perfect fit here in the premier league.

[spacer height=”30px”]

To add to it, Danny Welback scored two goals and set up Aubameyang’s goal. Welback was simply at his best. Iwobi also put up two stellar assists .It was altogether a redemption of sorts in the striking department.

[spacer height=”30px”]

It all started with Alex Iwobi playing a one-touch pass into Danny Welbeck. Then Welbeck flicked a lovely little volley behind him, into a space for Aubameyang . Which he cleverly netted past the onrushing Alex McCarthy.

[spacer height=”30px”]

The second goal was clinical of sorts. Alex Iwobi played a smooth through pass to Welbeck which he collected and fired one into the top corner after finding a deflection. This ended our first half with Arsenal taking the lead 2-1.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Southampton fought back with Shane Long’s goal by the 73rd minute. The Score 2-2.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Then, redemption. Alex Iwobi freed himself down the right flank, jinking his way inside to earn a yard of space. He then simply clipped a cross into the box, standing it up at the far post. Welbeck was on hand to meet it, rising above Cedric and powering a header down, into the ground and past Alex McCarthy.

2. Mustafi of defense

[spacer height=”30px”]

Arsenal were struggling in the early stages of the game. With the saints having 4 attempts and Arsenal having none. The defense of Mustafi and Chambers was a bit shaky in the first 20 minutes. All thanks to Cech who sees of a save from Tadic’s attempt.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Mustafi’s indecisive moment led to Southampton’s first goal. There were also moments of chaos where the ball was lost, passes were intercepted but thankfully little damage in the end.

[spacer height=”30px”]

This shows how much defense have to be tweaked in the Transfer Window to compete in the upcoming season.

3. Two Red cards

[spacer height=”30px”]

Adding to the nervousness, the final minutes saw two players being sent off. It started with a tussle between Stephens and Wilshere. Both the players were pulling them down each other as Stephen tried to evade through Jack. It ended with Stephens pushing Jack Wilshere down. The referee gave Stephens a straight red and booked Wilshere with the yellow.

[spacer height=”30px”]

But what followed was shocking of sorts when Southampton looked to take the resulting free-kick, Elneny appeared to push one of the Saints players placing the ball onto the field.

[spacer height=”30px”]

He clearly raised his arms, but is that why he was sent off?

[spacer height=”30px”]

Elneny was sent off as a result of which cost him three matches.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Thankfully FA overturned this decision on appeal from Arsenal which might find some Saints unhappy.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Elneny is all but cleared to play the upcoming games.
