From MARCA | Monchi Accepts Arsenal Offer To Become The Club Technical Director After Contract With AS Roma Expires In June

Monchi, Arsedevils

Arsenal are set to finally make a move for AS Roma’s Sporting Director Monchi, according to reports in Spanish news outlet Marca.

The club have been on the lookout for a Technical Director for quite some time now, with Monchi being their prime target. Reports in Spain have claimed that the 50-year-old has already accepted the role at Arsenal and will move over to the Emirates in the summer.

Monchi’s current contract at Roma expires in the summer, meaning if he does move to North London, Arsenal wouldn’t have to pay a dime. It would be an absolute steal for a man who is widely regarded as one of the best in the business.

The move would also see a mini Spanish takeover in place, with fellow Spaniard Unai Emery holding the managerial reins. The connection between Monchi and Emery does not just end at their nationality though. The two of them worked closely together while they were both at Sevilla and enjoyed a fantastic working relationship.

They were also very successful together. Sevilla dominated the Europa League between 2014-16, winning the competition a stunning 3 times. Monchi was at the heart of it all, having transformed the Spanish club with his work behind the scenes during his 17 years there. Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Julio Baptista, Seydou Keita and Ivan Rakitic are just a few of the world-class players he discovered when they were hardly even known to a majority of the football community.

If reports are to be believed, Monchi could be set to do the same for Arsenal too. He is supposedly set to be handed complete control over transfers once his move to the Emirates goes through. It would be hard to argue against the fact that the Gunners are in desperate need of someone as experienced as him to take over. The club are a mess when it comes to transfers at the moment.

Sven Mislintat, who was the club’s Head of Recruitment until this month, did a magnificent job during his time at the Emirates. He ensured the arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Bernd Leno. He also spotted the likes of Matteo Guendouzi and Konstantinos Mavropanos – both relatively unknown before their arrival, but now a key part of the squad.

However, he opted to leave the club this month, after they completely snubbed him for the technical director role he thought he deserved. His departure wasn’t popular by any means, with many calling out the Arsenal board for allowing him to leave. However, if the club can secure the signature of Monchi, then it will definitely compensate for the loss of Mislintat.
