Are Arsenal About to Make an U-turn on Edu by Bringing in a New Sporting Director This Summer

It appears that there is another possible shift behind the scenes as Arsenal begin talks with Luis Campos as a possible Director of football. Quite where that leaves Edu Gasper as the club’s Technical Director is unclear, but should the North London outfit announce the appointment, Edu can consider himself surplus to requirements within a season or two.

The fact is that Arsenal’s owner Stan Kroenke cannot afford any further mistakes in the forthcoming transfer window and let’s be honest, Edu has hardly covered himself in lasting glory after failing to appoint key personnel for the previous campaign including a playmaker. As much as Mikel Arteta is under the spotlight for Arsenal’s dismal season, Edu was guilty of not being assertive enough to fill the gaps, especially the one left by Mesut Ozil’s departure.

Supporters found it hard to comprehend that the playmaker was forced through the exit door without securing a Premier League-ready replacement. The loan deal for Dani Ceballos was a two-year experiment that failed dismally and the inclusion of Odegaard was too little too late.

Apart from Gabriel Martinelli, who was said to be the work of Edu, the former invincible has been incredibly ordinary in his role and despite the obvious fondness of fans, he’s failed to show that he is capable of fulfilling the role or that he has an eye for genuine talent.

The transfer of Willian was the type of deal that suggests a lack of credibility to perform at the highest level as a Technical Director and Edu facilitated that deal personally. Some will try to balance the spectacular acquisition of Martinelli against the dire addition of Willian, that argument aside for a moment, what other positive examples can support the continuing employment of the Brazilian.

If Luis Campos does arrive, Edu will immediately relinquish a sizeable chunk of his power in terms of transfers and it will be fairly obvious to everyone that Kroenke has diluted the position to the point where it is untenable.

However, bringing Luis Campos to the Emirates isn’t going to be cheap, but he does have an exceptional track record of bringing through stars, which is highly appealing. His links to the likes of Mendy, Pepe, Lemar, and Martial confirm his pedigree and ability and he would certainly be seen as an upgrade on the current ineptitude at the Emirates.

Arsenal have so far denied any interest and are, perhaps, considering allowing Arteta and Edu one last chance to prove themselves, but they are on the clock to quickly raise the club’s profile. This summer could be very much shit or bust for the pair.

Stay tuned to know more about Arsenal.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
