Arsenal Reportedly Eyeing Three Serie A Players to Reinforce Their Midfield and Attack

Kulusevski, Arthur, Ramsey

January is just a single day away and Arsenal are busy planning their winter transfer strategy. The Gunners are in the market for forwards and midfielders, with their defence showing massive improvement since the season began. According to reports, Arsenal have three Juventus players on their wishlist, namely Aaron Ramsey, Dejan Kulusevski and Arthur Melo.

After a turbulent start to the season, scoring no goals and letting in 9 goals in their first three Premier League matches, Arsenal have drastically improved as the season progressed. They currently sit at fourth position in the Premier League and have booked their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup against Liverpool.

This boost in their results is mostly due to their summer signings and young stars like Saka, Smith Rowe and Martinelli. However, Arteta cannot solely rely on the youngsters to bail out the club every time, with forwards Aubameyang and Pepe having issues on and off the pitch.

According to Spanish news outlet Marca (via Daily Cannon), Arsenal are eyeing three players from Juventus to help them keep the pressure on for a top-four finish. The report states that the North London side are after their former star Aaron Ramsey, midfielder Arthur Melo, and winger Dejan Kulusevski.

Ever since Aaron Ramsey was picked up by Juventus in 2019 for free, various reports have suggested that the club wanted to offload the Welshman due to his high wages. It is no surprise that the 31-year-old has been linked with a return to the Emirates, as he was a mainstay at the club for 8 years.

It is quite evident that Ramsey has had problems in cementing his position in the Juventus midfield, with just 25 starts in the Serie A in three-and-a-half seasons, scoring five times and providing five assists. Under Allegri, he seems to have further fallen down the pecking order, with just one start this season.

Arthur Melo, like Ramsey, is a central midfielder who joined the Old Lady from Barcelona in 2020. Similar to the Welshman, the 25-year-old has struggled to find game time in Turin. The Brazilian has managed to score just one goal in 2,031 minutes in Serie A.

Although he was injured for the first six games, Arthur has only started in three league games from a probable 13 this season, getting just 244 minutes on the pitch so far. He has struggled to find his peak form in Juventus, where he has a contract until 2025.

The Juventus player who has been most linked with a switch to Arsenal is Swedish winger Dejan Kulusevski. His name has been doing the rounds since October. According to earlier reports, the Gunners even contacted his agent regarding the possibility of a transfer.

The 21-year-old winger has struggled to replicate his Parma form, managing to start only 4 games and failing to score a single goal in 16 Serie A appearances. His solitary goal this season came against Zenit in the Champions League. Under Allegri, he has failed to cement his position in the starting eleven, managing just 647 minutes in the league. The Swedish forward is tied to the club until 2025, however, they could let him leave for around €35m, according to reports.

Linking Ramsey with a return to the Emirates seems more nostalgic than logical, with his age and high wages certainly not fitting the description of a player Arsenal are currently looking for in the market, but Arthur and Kulusevski, if available for a reasonable fee, could be brilliant buys for the club.

Arthur could easily be a good backup in the midfield, with Xhaka and Partey starting the maximum of games. Kulusevski, meanwhile, could compete with Saka and Pepe for the right-wing position, and his versatility also allows him to play as a centre-forward.

This could help Arteta with rotation of the squad, with injuries and the rising Covid cases making it difficult for the manager to field a team of his liking. However, it would not be an easy task to negotiate with Juventus for two of their players to bring them in the same transfer window.

  1. If Arsenal is looking to strengthen in the January transfer window, they should not be interested in buying players that are struggling to get game time at their clubs. Instead, Arsenal must by young quality players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Boubacar Kamara and Arthur Cabral, who, are consistent with good performances weekly, as, they are top players for their team .
