Aubameyang Double, Ceballos & Willock Pivot and Watford’s Lack of ‘Cojones’: Breakdown of What Inspired Arsenal’s Win Over Watford

Arsenal vs Watford

Why do I always get the feeling that we never like to win games easily? We always have to make things difficult for us even when we’re leading 3-0. That is exactly what happened in the Arsenal vs Watford game. Watford deserve credit for their fight and resolve to stay in the Premier League. Unfortunately, they are now relegated along with Bournemouth and Norwich.

Arsenal clung on to secure a hard-fought 3-2 win against Watford. The Hornets made a valiant fightback to score 2 goals after Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 lead within 33 minutes. Emiliano Martinez was once again the saviour for the Gunners.

Arteta went for a 2-3-5 system with the ball in the Arsenal vs Watford game, thereby switching back to his tactics pre-lockdown. Xhaka covered for Tierney every time the Scot went higher up the pitch. We tried to attack from the right more. Pepe and Maitland-Niles formed a strong partnership on the right flank.

Rob Holding impressed me as well with his vital clearances. According to WhoScored, he made a mammoth 12 clearances, the most in the Arsenal vs Watford game. It is difficult to mark a brute like Troy Deeney, but Maitland-Niles did well to keep the Watford captain in check.

Tierney had to be on top of his game as Watford tried to attack from the right more with Ismaila Sarr. Sarr’s pace was a problem that we struggled to deal with. Without the ball, we shifted to a 5-2-3 yet again with Ceballos and Willock forming the midfield pivot.

It has been a while since we scored three goals within the first 35 minutes, but I’m relieved that we did. Dawson crashed into Lacazette in the 5th minute as the Frenchman was trying to meet Aubameyang’s cross, resulting in Mike Dean giving a penalty and predictably enough, Aubameyang converts the penalty.

Tierney wasn’t looking happy scoring his first goal for the club. Maybe, he was more interested in helping Aubameyang win the Premier League Golden Boot. Aubameyang, under pressure, lays the ball for the left-back. Tierney’s shot took a deflection off Hughes and the ball went in.

However, the third goal was absolute class from Aubameyang. Tierney’s beautiful long throw was taken down by an even more beautiful first touch by Aubameyang. He went for the overhead-kick and beat Foster at his near post. Only Thierry Henry has scored more goals (7) than Aubameyang (5) in the closing day of the Premier League season.

Watford played in a 2-4-1-3 formation with the ball. Deeney, Welbeck, and Sarr formed the front three with Pereyra behind them. Deeney and Welbeck were given the freedom to switch sides often. They did press high at times. But, every time we took the ball to their half, they switched to a 4-5-1 with Deeney and Sarr dropping into the midfield.

As mentioned before, Watford kept attacking from the right with Sarr. For instance, Sarr did well to control the pass from Hughes and ran away with it. He looked for Welbeck and tried to cross the ball for the former Arsenal striker to score. But instead, the ball went straight to Martinez. Ismaila Sarr was indeed the best player for Watford in this game.

Trailing by 3 goals, Watford tried to get back into the game and guess who helped them do it? David Luiz, of course. He puts in a needless tackle on Welbeck, whose shot was anyway going straight to Martinez and Deeney smashed the ball home. This goal certainly increased their confidence.

Deeney and Welbeck played beautiful one-touch passes before the shot from Welbeck but his shot was saved by Martinez. Welbeck eventually scored in the 66th minute. Sarr puts in a beautiful low ball for the striker to finish. They kept attacking more after that.

According to OneFootball, Watford took 19 shots in total with 6 on target. It is unfortunate for Watford to go down like this, considering how they played the Arsenal vs Watford game. Let’s focus now on the FA Cup final against Chelsea.
