Tomiyasu Returns, ESR Out, Martineilli In – Team News and Predicted Lineup | How Arsenal’s Starting XI Would Look Like Against Wolves

Arsenal vs Wolves

Arsenal will play Wolves for the second time in a gap of 14 days. Winning tonight’s game will be crucial for the Gunners as it could widen a mere 2 point gap between the two. A draw would keep Arsenal sweating for a Champions League spot while a loss could deal a heavy blow to the young Gunners’ turn-around season.

Two weeks ago, a header from Gabriel Magalhaes proved to be the winner for the Gunners, who ended the game with 10 men. Gabriel Martinelli received two yellow cards in the space of 6 seconds. Nevertheless, it was Arsenal’s first win of 2022 and set the tone for them.

The defensively strong Wolves will welcome their star player Neto into the attack. He rejoined them after a long spell of injury and his addition makes them stronger than in the previous fixture. Similarly, the hosts might bring in right-back Tomiyasu into the starting lineup. The Japanese returned to the squad against Brentford last week.

Both Arsenal and Wolves are performing great on the defensive end, led by their goalkeepers. Aaron Ramsdale and Jose Sa are joint-second in saves in the Premier League this season, making it difficult for opposing teams to score. The backline is also strong for both teams.

On the managerial aspect, both Mikel Arteta and Bruno Lage have exceeded the football pundits’ predictions at the start of the season. The teams have supported their managers well, with strong performances on the field and the locker room discussions have shown some positive impacts on the results too.

Interestingly, Arsenal have been very good at home, with 26 points – 3rd best record in the Premier League, while the Wolves have shown strong character on-road with 7 wins in 12 games, outscoring opponents 13-8 in the process. So, the statistics are pointing towards a very intriguing midweek fixture.

Arsenal Predicted Line-Up against Wolves

The return of Tomiyasu and Martinelli could be a huge positive for Arteta. While ESR and Cedric performed well as replacements against Brentford, the Spaniard will look to go with the strongest possible lineup for tonight’s important fixture.

Goalkeeper:

Aaron Ramsdale (GK): Aaron has been a fan favourite since he played his first game in red and white. At home, he always provides high energy to the crowd. Leno’s days at Emirates seem to be over with the emergence of the English shot-stopper. Ramsdale will need to be attentive to the Wolves’ counterattacks.

Defence:

Takehiro Tomiyasu (RB): The Japanese international is fit again and will be a huge boost for the Gunners. He thrives in offence and defence, making the Arsenal vs Wolves contest more favourable towards the home team.

Gabriel (CB): The 24-year-old Brazilian has settled well in his second year at the Emirates. Gabriel has shown great tackling and aerial abilities in the 43 games he has played for the North London side. The goalscorer in the previous meeting could well be the difference-maker in tonight’s game.

Ben White (CB): White has shone well among the newcomers of 2021. Defensively and ball control-wise, he was the player Arteta was looking to bring in to improve the defence. The English centre-back will play a vital role in stopping the attacks of Bruno Lage’s men.

Kieran Tierney (LB): Keiran will be able to express more offensively with Martinelli coming in for ESR. These two have great combination and link-up plays. The Scot’s running crosses, and recoveries have given the North London outfit a huge advantage in previous matches.

Midfield:

Granit Xhaka (CM): Xhaka’s armband snubbing incidence in the last match was a shocker, but the Swiss midfielder remains a favourite to start the match. Xhaka needs to be very alert throughout the ninety minutes, given the fast counter-attacking football played by the visitors.

Thomas Partey (CM): The big Ghanaian is slowly getting closer to his Atletico Madrid reputation. Improved accuracy in passing and tackling, and better connection plays make his presence important for the outcome. Though he has only 1 goal and 1 assist this season, the defensive cover provided by him has allowed the Gunners to dominate games.

Bukayo Saka (RM): The English youngster scored a goal last week and it will certainly boost his confidence. Saka, the second top-scorer for the team this season, will have to be at his best to break Wolves’ quality defence. The addition of Tomiyasu at right-back will allow him to move more freely.

Martin Odegaard (AM): Amongst the best performers in the squad, Odegaard is the offensive brain for the Gunners. The Norwegian has cemented his position in the lineup due to his vision and chance creation. He could catch the opposition keeper off-guard with some surprising shots as well.

Martinelli (LM): A red card to forget for the young Brazilian striker. Replacing Smith Rowe could be a difficult decision for the boss, but Martinelli’s energy and pace will give him an edge over Arsenal’s No 10.

Attack:

Alexandre Lacazette (ST): Although the experienced French striker is crucial in build-ups, he has a poor record in front of the goal. He has accumulated only 3 goals in 18 Premier League appearances this season, which is very poor for a striker. However, Arteta has no other option for the position at the moment.

Predicted Score:

The North London outfit’s recent form and home advantage will give them a slight advantage in the game. But, they cannot underestimate the opposition. We could have lesser goals despite a fast-paced and attacking match, with Arsenal winning the game against Wolves 1-0.
