It has been a rough past few days for the gunners fans. Fan favorite Aaron Ramsey has just declared his free transfer to Juventus after the end of current season. To add to it the Gunners seemed to be incurring a never ending injury list collide with a busy fixture period. However in a bid to provide some respite to all this, Arsenal have announced that young defender Zech Medley has signed a new contract after impressing head coach Unai Emery.
The young English defender has seen a rapid rise this season due to the Gunners defensive woes. He has already been handed senior appearances in the Europa league and the FA cup this season.
He made his senior debut in November, coming off the bench during the 3-0 Europa League win against FC Vorskla in the Europa League. It was swiftly followed by a home debut against Qarabag in the same competition. His latest appearance was in the 3-0 win against Blackpool in the FA cup, while coming off the bench.
Speaking after his announcement, Zech Medley had this to say :
“I’m very pleased and honoured to be signing another contract with this club,” said the centre-back. “I’ve been supporting them since I was a kid and I’ve been watching them since I was young, so to be able to sign with such an amazing team is really good.
“Since last year a lot of stuff has happened quite quickly in a short space of time, but I’ve just had to keep my head down and progress. Hopefully I can achieve more.”
“It’s been amazing,” said Medley iving his first interview afer signing the contract. “I’ve just tried to take everything in my stride and hopefully I can push on for more regular chances in the first-team.
“It’s really important to get that experience and to just be around players who are really good and playing at a world-class level so that I can learn off them and see how they train and prepare for big games. It’s really good for my development.”
Zech Medley, 18, can prove to be a part of Arsenal’s future and with him already having impressed Emery, it may come as no surprise that he may be soon drafted into the first team picture soon. Current Arsenal defenders are mostly approaching their peak or are already past their prime and to be honest are not upto the level of competing with the other big teams.
While still being a long way from the finished product, a new contract does signify the confidence and faith the club has placed on him already. With arsenal’s most defenders past their prime, handing out contracts to the next generation does seem like the right step and specially when the player is as talented as Zech.
With Zech Medley now thrown into the picture, Arsenal can look to invest in other areas of the pitch and build a team around these youngsters.
