Ernesto Valverde has all but confirmed that Denis Suarez will move on loan to Arsenal until the end of the season.
Suarez’s potential move to the Emirates has been the saga of the window so far. Initially, it appeared as though the deal would be wrapped up within days. However, an impasse in negotiations led to complications, and the deal looked to have fallen through. There hasn’t been much of an update since, until Valverde revealed a move was close to completion in his press conference.
“I know Denis was in this situation. It’s not official yet and we have to wait a little,” Valverde told the media ahead of Barcelona’s Copa Del Rey quarter-final against Sevilla.
“It was a possibility that everyone valued, and we hope that things go well.”
As mentioned earlier, there were fears that the move wouldn’t go through after the two clubs had reached a block in negotiations. According to reports, Arsenal were eager to wrap up a loan deal for Suarez with an option to buy in the summer. Barcelona though, were seeking commitment.
Suarez s current deal with the Catalan giants expires in 2020, meaning his value will drop in the summer. As a result, Barca were hesitant to let the 25-year-old Spaniard leave unless Arsenal could commit to buying him. The Gunners though, as is public knowledge now, are desperately short on transfer funds at the moment.
Now according to an official statement released by the club, Barcelona have confirmed the agreement with Denis Suarez over extending terms by tying down the winger until 30 June 2021, this has in turn allowed Arsenal to secure his services for the rest of the season with further reports suggesting an agreement of an option to buy next season for a sum of €23 Mil.
With Champions League football for next season still not guaranteed, there is a risk they may not be able to afford an expensive deal. There is also a reluctance to commit a large portion of their funds, if there will be any, to this move.
Unai Emery is in desperate need of defensive reinforcements at the moment. He currently only has one fit center-back and would like to improve the depth of his squad. Ivan Perisic has also been linked with a switch to the Emirates, so the club could be keen to save up for that move.

As a result, it looked as though the move would not go through. However, official statement from the club has confirmed that Barca have now made Suarez commit to extending his deal by a further year, till at least 2021. This will protect their asset, and reduces the need to sell him in the summer. This in turn has allowed negotiations with Arsenal to proceed once more, and a move is now officially completed for the time being.
