Barcelona Plotting January Bid for In-form €32m Rated Manchester United Defender

Diogo Dalot, Barcelona, Manchester United, new contract

According to latest reports, FC Barcelona are plotting a move for in-form Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot. The defender’s contract expires at the end of the season and his agent, Jorge Mendes, wants a move to Spain for his client.

The Portuguese full-back is in the last year of his contract and the Red Devils have been locked in talks over a new deal. Meanwhile, the defender can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside England from January.

If United fail to agree an extension with Dalot by the end of this month, the English side would certainly trigger the option to extend his contract for a year. The right-back has been a constant fixture in the starting line-up under Ten Hag and losing him would be a great loss for the team.

Now, as reported by Daily Mail last month, FC Barcelona are considering making a move for Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot next summer. The full-back’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has expressed his desire to secure a move to Camp Nou for the player.

Barca president, Joan Laporta, has a good relationship with Mendes and this could be vital in securing the move. The Catalans have struggled this season to find a permanent solution at right-back with Alejandro Balde, Hector Bellerin, Jules Kounde and Sergi Roberto – all being used in that position by Xavi.

Meanwhile, in a more recent update by Spanish outlet SPORT (via Sport Bible), Barcelona could make an attempt to sign Diogo Dalot in the January transfer window, rather than signing a pre-contract. However, they could face competition from Juventus, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and AS Roma – who all have expressed interest in signing him.

Dalot’s Performance At United This Season

Diogo Dalot made 34 senior appearances in all competitions in his first two seasons at Old Trafford before he was loaned out to Serie A side AC Milan in October 2020. He had a decent display at San Siro and the Italian club wanted to sign the player permanently when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still manager at the club.

Borrusia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid also enquired about the right-back earlier this year before Erik ten Hag’s arrival. However, the 23-year-old has been phenomenal for the Red Devils this season and has been praised for his performances under the Dutchman.

The Portuguese defender has cemented his place as the first-choice right-back under the Dutch manager. He is a great fit for Ten Hag’s system, with his growing defensive attributes complemented by his attacking prowess down United’s right flank.

The Portuguese has the most touches of the ball in his own half, showcasing his defensive contributions to the manager. He has 14 tackles and averages the most interceptions (9) ahead of his other defensive compatriots. Ten Hag has rated him undroppable with 39 ball recoveries and the most aerial duels won within the United squad.

Bruno Fernandes, the primary play-maker of the team, has ten created chances which the 23-year-old full-back has matched as well. The Dutch manager has praised Dalot for the improvements he has made under his management.

The most impressive thing, however, is the player’s increased creative service for Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, which highlights his massive improvement going forward under the current manager compared to the previous managers.

Diogo Dalot refused to comment on his future with Manchester United and said he is happy and focused on his on-field performances in a recent interview with Sky Sports (via The Sun):

“I don’t think it’s the time to think about my contract situation. We’re in the process to improve our game as team”

“I love to play for Man United as I always try to show. I’m happy – this is the most important thing.”

Previously, the 23-year-old was blocked from joining AC Milan permanently in the 2021-22 season only because they were unable to complete the deal for Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. However, under Ralf Rangnick, the right-back got a new lease of life and ended up replacing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, starting 30 games and not getting any injuries.

Erik Ten Hag has stuck with Dalot so far this season and he has been an almost ever-present defender for Manchester United. This makes it vital for the Red Devils to secure a long-term contract with the player and his agent.
