Besiktas Seriously Planning on Signing Man United Forward This Summer, Stay at Old Trafford Looks Unlikely

Wout Weghorst, Manchester United, Besiktas

According to the latest reports, Turkish side Besiktas are looking to re-sign Manchester striker Wout Weghorst this summer. The Dutch striker is currently on a six-month loan stint at Old Trafford but, a permanent switch at the end of the season looks highly unlikely.

Wout Weghorst was sent on a season-long loan to Besiktas from Burnley last summer, but his loan stint was cut short when United came calling. The Dutchman joined the Red Devils in the winter transfer window as an emergency striker signing. He walked into the starting line-up straight away, with 18 continuous starts across all competitions.

However, with just 2 goals in all competitions, the 30-year-old has failed to establish himself as the first-choice striker under Erik ten Hag. Marcus Rashford’s stunning form has propelled the Englishman into a central role in recent weeks, displacing the Burnley forward from the starting XI.

Now, as reported by GOAL, Super Lig club Besiktas are keen on reuniting with Wout Weghorst in the summer. His time at Old Trafford has been mostly disappointing and Manchester United do not seem keen to make his stay at the club permanent, keeping in mind his poor form.

The Dutch striker had a successful start to the 2022-23 season with the Turkish club, with 8 goals and 4 assists in just 16 games (stats via fbref). Therefore, Besiktas are planning on re-signing him on another loan spell from Burnley this summer.

Weghorst still has a contract with English side Burnley. The Dutchman is contracted to the Clarets until 2025 but, the club are looking to offload the striker this summer. The Football Insider reports that the former Wolfsburg striker does not fit into Burnley manager Vincent Kompany’s plans.

On the other hand, Manchester United have also set their sights on new striker targets for the summer. Manager Erik ten Hag has identified Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane as his primary target for the upcoming transfer window.

Besides the England captain, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has also been heavily linked with the Red Devils. Other names such as Mohammed Kudus of Ajax and Brighton wonderkid Evan Ferguson are also rumoured to be on United’s watch list.

Furthermore, the Dutch manager could also persist with Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial as the central striker. This would also allow more minutes to other wingers like Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Jadon Sancho in the team.

What do you think of Wout Weghorst’s stint at Manchester United? Is it the right move to not sign the Dutchman? Who should the Red Devils sign this summer? Let us know in the comments.
