Is This German World Cup Winning Defender The Man To Fix The Arsenal Defence Next Season ?

Boateng, Transfer news, Arsedevils

Is Jerome Boateng the answer to Arsenal defensive conundrum? Bayern Munich’s central defender, Jerome Boateng, is the latest player to be linked with the North London club. The German international (30) will be on offer for around £27m and despite initial reservations about his age, he could offer strength, composure and reliability to a deeply troubled defence.

The German has fallen behind Mats Hummels and Niklas Sule in the pecking order at Bayern land is becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of appearances which bodes well for the lucky club that secures his services. Boateng is a ball playing centre back, that is comfortable in possession and has a good defensive radar.

His timing is excellent, he relentlessly chases an opponent from one end of the pitch to the other and he isn’t adverse to the odd shoulder to shoulder argy-bargy. When Boateng commits to a tackle, it is generally a full force affair, that is designed to take the ball and occasionally the player in the same sweeping manoeuvre.

What I like about Boateng in particular, is his ability to perform the simple things well. An incoming ball is cut out and put out of play. He never tries to over elaborate or indulge in fancy or complicated play and as a result, he doesn’t run the risk of being robbed. It’s a pity that he couldn’t share his secret with Shkodran Mustafi.

Arsenal could of course look for someone younger but they will be at least double the asking price. We now deal in a world where the value of a defender has outstripped those of a striker in many cases. Arsenal’s Achilles heel has been its defence. Wenger patched it up and tried to ignore its failings but that strategy cost him his job as each season appeared to deteriorate around October/November time.

Wenger Speaks On What He Might Do Next But Is It All Smoke And Mirrors.

Wenger stubbornly refused to acknowledge the weakness of his players due to loyalty. Emery has no such problems with implementing change and amputating infected limbs. The Spaniard will have to iron out these age old issues as soon as the Europa league concludes and I fully expect Arsenal’s business in the transfer market to be concluded by the end of June.

Jerome Boateng is an option but Arsenal are currently linked with a number of defenders. I’d prefer Boateng to a great many that have made the transfer headlines including Toby Alderweireld.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
