United’s Frontline Remain Ineffective as Maguire Faults Again | How United’s Players Fared Against Burnley

Another underwhelming display resulted in an inexcusable result for Manchester United as they failed to rescue a significant three points against Burnley on Tuesday. Despite delivering a dominant first-half performance, Ralf Rangnick’s side struggled to maintain their vigour throughout the ninety minutes.

A boisterous move resulted in Paul Pogba breaking the deadlock in the first half. However, the visitors struggled to cope with Burnley’s physical imposition, conceding a poor goal in the second half. The team have now won only three of their last five Premier League fixtures.

The Red Devils will be hoping to witness an upturn in results in the upcoming games. However, with the team struggling to deliver consistently, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils emerge as a force capable of challenging for top-four.

Starting XI

David De Gea (GK) – 7/10: Despite conceding a goal, De Gea remained amongst United’s better players on the night. An impressive save in the second-half ensured United remained in the game, but his efforts went in vain as the visitors failed in securing three points.

Diogo Dalot (RB) – 5/10: A sombre performance saw the United full-back fail to have an impactful game against Burnley. Although the Portuguese posed as a threat going forward and remained solid in defence, the full-back failed to deliver timely crosses and link-up with the winger on Tuesday.

Raphael Varane (RCB) – 7/10: Another impressive performance saw Raphael Varane put the home side in front, only for the goal to be ruled out due to off-side. However, despite the disappointment, the Frenchman remained a commanding figure in the backline throughout the game.

Harry Maguire (LCB) – 4/10: Partly responsible for the goal conceded, Maguire failed to deliver a notable performance against the Clarets. With Victor Lindelof having returned to the squad, it remains to be seen if Maguire remains a first-team player over the coming weeks.

Luke Shaw (LB) – 6/10: An energetic performance saw Luke Shaw register a much-needed assist on Tuesday. With the team looking seemingly balanced following his inclusion at left-back, Shaw will be hoping to improve his contributions in the upcoming games.

Scott McTominay (CDM) – 5/10: Although a physical presence on the field, McTominay failed to deliver a commanding performance. However, with the team short on players in his position, he is likely to retain his place in the line-up and Rangnick will be hoping to extract the best out of the Scotsman.

Paul Pogba (CM) – 6/10: An impressive first-half display saw Paul Pogba register his name on the scoresheet. However, despite a dominant performance, much like his teammates, the Frenchman gradually faded through the second half but will be hoping to contribute to the team’s prospects over the coming weeks.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM) – 7/10: Amongst the most lively performers for United in the first half, an impactful performance saw Fernandes’ role remain fundamental to the team’s creativity against Burnley. While the midfielder, too, struggled to create goal-scoring chances in the second half, the Portuguese international will be keen on playing a role in improving results over the remainder of the campaign.

Marcus Rashford (RW) – 5/10: Despite showing glimpses of promise vis-à-vis his overall game in the first half, Rashford eventually failed to improve on his positives over the ninety minutes. However, with the team looking significantly balanced across the frontline, the winger will be keen on improving his contributions over the coming weeks.

Jadon Sancho (LW) – 7/10: Amongst United’s most lively creators on Tuesday, Sancho ensured he remained an impactful presence throughout the game. The winger’s movement alongside his composure in possession played a vital role in United’s dominant first-half display. With negligible competition for his position, the youngster will be keen on improving his output in the coming weeks.

Edinson Cavani (ST) – 5/10: Despite carrying out his role diligently, the United striker failed to deliver an impressionable performance against Burnley. With Cristiano Ronaldo likely to return to the starting line-up, Cavani will be keen on contributing to the team’s prospects in his capacity.

Substitutes

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – 5/10: A surprise exclusion from the starting line-up, Ronaldo’s introduction had minimal impact on United’s performance on the night. Currently undergoing a goal-drought, the Portuguese forward will be keen on improving his performances going forward.

Jesse Lingard (CAM) – 5/10: A desperate inclusion, Lingard failed to have any impact following his introduction in the 80th minute. However, with the team in need of impactful squad players, Lingard will be keen on contributing to the team’s prospects over the coming weeks.

Anthony Elanga (LW) – 6/10: Expected to be included in the United starting line-up, Elanga failed to have an impact off the bench against Burnley. However, with numerous opportunities to come in the future, the youngster will be keen on showcasing his potential over the remainder of the season.
