Forgotten Arsenal Loanee Nicknamed the ‘Brexit Busquets’ Could Get A New Lease Of Life At Arsenal Due To This Reason ?

Calum Chambers

Sadly, Fulham with Calum Chambers have been relegated and I say that from the perspective of a Londoner that has enjoyed many games at the Cottage and also because I enjoyed watching them ascend from the Championship to the premier league last season.

Their demotion probably means that a few players may be offloaded to recoup some of the £105m they spent to stay in the elite league but it also means an end to the loan spell of Arsenal’s misfit defender, Calum Chambers who had been converted into a ‘midfield anchorman’

In a typical Sun story we were informed that Unai Emery could be ready to hand him his chance due to

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“ Matteo Guendouzi’s form plateauing”[/perfectpullquote]

This is surely The Sun at its delusional best, because Guendouzi has been nothing short of a revelation this season and has shown that if you are good enough, you are old enough.

His last outing against Newcastle showed great maturity and control, curbing his natural game to get the result the team needed, this from someone barely 20 years of age.

Calum Chambers has apparently been nicknamed by his fellow cottagers “Brexit Busquets” because of his tidy, reliable, resilient influence, in a direct comparison to Barcelona’s defensive-midfield legend Sergio Busquets.

Not exactly a nickname that rolls off the tongue and if that’s the best Fulham’s players could come up with, then they deserve to be relegated.

I’m not sure that Calum Chambers is remotely in the same class as Busquets unless they went to school together.

The defender did well for Fulham in his new role and at times was arguably their most consistent player but they were still beaten regularly and still got relegated.

Not something that is exclusively his fault but it’s a fact.

The suggestion that he will be used in place of Guendouzi is at best fanciful and suggests that some of the Sun’s reporters should have called time on their working lunch in a nearby pub.

He could feature in the Arsenal side at some point, especially if there are injuries but not at the expense of Guendouzi.

If Calum Chambers hasn’t cracked a first team position since his arrival back in 2014, he’s hardly likely to be considered worthy of doing so now.

He will either be loaned, sold or become a utility player that provides cover when all other options are exhausted.

The truth is that Calum Chambers has never looked remotely up to the standard of what’s required for Arsenal.

You can bleat on that he hasn’t had sufficient game time but that’s because he’s never given any indication of being good enough.

Sadly, Wenger has wasted millions trying to find cut price defenders without hitting the jackpot. Oleg Luzhny, Andre Santos, Igors Stepanos, Sebastian Squillaci, Pascal Cygan, Pat Lydersen, Gus Caesar, Philippe Senderos, Sylvinho and Gabriel are part of a seemingly endless conveyor belt of substandard flannel footed defenders.

Calum Chambers may not be as bad as some of those examples or he may be on a par or worse, depending on your point of view.

You don’t have to be a genius to know that Emery is certainly going to add to his defensive line in the summer and I doubt it’s crossed his mind to save money by making do.

As a result, he should sell Calum Chambers off as quickly as possible, even if he has to pack his cases and drive him to his next club.

A players career is short and it’s only fair to allow him an opportunity to achieve the best he can elsewhere, if he can’t do that where he is.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
