So We’ve Got the Cannon Back But When Are we Going to Get The Real Arsenal Back

Arsenal Jersey, cannon

Arsenal have reconnected with their history by ditching the Arsenal crest in exchange for its much-loved cannon. The cannon was and remains an instantly recognisable logo for the North London club that requires no explanation. It’s part of the Gunners’ fabulous history and represents an era that was not only successful but heralded significant changes in the industry.

With the recent news that Daniel Ek’s bid for the club had been declined, fans have been fairly desperate to find some crumbs of comfort that they can relate to from a club that has completely lost its identity and direction.

Bringing the cannon back has triggered the imagery of a club that no longer exists but one which we all want, so as we face the end of one season and the beginning of another restructure, it’s natural to ask when will we get our Arsenal back?

Who knows is the answer, but it’s not going to happen overnight because Arsenal are in a phenomenal mess at every level. Sven Mislintat described Arsenal as an “Absolute mess, dysfunctional and without a clear plan.” He wasn’t joking, it has been evident in a series of decisions that have included poor recruitment, contract negotiations, and a flawed management pyramid.

Arsenal need rebooting, but the big question is who can do it because at present, the elements within Arsenal are working independently rather than as a whole and there isn’t a clear leader to begin the process and bringing the cannon back on the crest will certainly not solve anything.

There’s always the argument for and against heavy spending on a team to bring success but in this case, the spending is to stabilise the club and maintain their credibility for a top-six place, nothing more. We’re not talking about reaching the Champions League final or winning the Premier League, we’re talking about standing on the spot just so others don’t disappear from view.

Only then can we try to fashion a competitive side that has the spirit of so-called lesser clubs such as Burnley, Leicester, and Wolves. The truth is that Arteta may not have enough in his locker to deal with the overwhelming circumstances and broken elements associated with the ‘Arsenal project’.

I’m not even sure that Guardiola or Klopp had to deal with the problems that awaited the former Arsenal midfielder. He was romanced and seduced by an idea, unaware of what was lurking behind the scenes in this fractured club that is run rather haphazardly by a man who has no experience or passion.

Arsenal fans need to brace themselves for another difficult transitional season that will see even more changes and the reality is that there could be another two seasons after that.
