Arsenal Captain Throws Light On Startling Differences Between Arsene Wenger’s And Unai Emery’s Tactics

Petr Cech has been a constant between the sticks for Arsenal since his transfer to the club from their fellow London rivals Chelsea, in 2015. Cech after winning every team trophy with Chelsea, decided to shift his base to the Emirates, and became an integral part of Arsene Wenger’s team for the final three years of his tenure.

Cech is one of the players who could definitely throw some light on Wenger’s tactics, the famed Wengerball, and definite reasons for Arsenal’s inability to win the Premier League since 2003/04, when they won it undefeated, the famous season of ‘Invincibles’.
When questioned upon the comments of the much-loved Santi Cazorla, where the ex-Arsenal midfielder said that Arsenal lacked self belief to win top trophies, Cech, told the Islington Gazette:
“For any club who’ve won titles in recent years you have that know how to finish it off. You can see that in any sport. Take Tiger Woods.
“Five years it’s been since he won a major tournament – the longer it goes the harder it becomes. This club haven’t won the league for more than ten years so you need to get back into knowing how to do it.
“We started off with the new manager from scratch and we’re trying to get a mentality of winning every game, progressing every game, working every day and hopefully we can build this up and win the title sooner rather than later.”
With the Gunners going nine years without a major trophy before lifting the 2014 FA Cup and still missing out on the Premier League since 2004, and continually failing to qualify for the Champions League over the last two seasons under Wenger, Cech gave an honest explanation as to what went wrong for the North London club, and highlighted the key difference on what has changed since in the club with the arrival of Unai Emery, the former PSG boss, in place of Wenger. When asked what the team lacked in the past, Cech said:
“The Arsenal way was more important than getting the points sometimes. This is not sometimes how you win the league.
“Sometimes you need to make sure you win ugly games when you are not completely playing well and you just dig deep and you just closed the back door and win 1-0 no matter how.
“I think this is what we lacked since I arrived in the last three years, this is what we lacked.”
This season has been a challenging one for Petr Cech, with the appointment of Emery, who was chosen as the successor of Arsene Wenger. The Spaniard demands his defence play the ball out from the back, something new for the Czech goalkeeper. Arsenal started this season with two consecutive losses against champions Manchester City and city rivals Chelsea.
Right now, after their fourth consecutive league win over Everton in the weekend, where Petr Cech kept only his third clean sheet in his last 23 matches, the Gunners rank sixth in the league standings. Reflecting on the early struggles of the season, Cech responded:
“It’s been a new way for the whole team and we need to find a way to use it to our advantage but every day and every game we are improving.”
Arsenal resume their Premier League Campaign against Watford at the Emirates coming weekend with the Hornets in some form after a brilliant start to their league campaign and Arsenal will surely need Cech back in action on Saturday in what will be a crunching game.
