Four World Class Centre Backs Manchester United are Reportedly Targeting as Their First January Signing

Solskjaer, Arsedevils

Manchester United have struggled throughout the season so far but after the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the red devils have delivered one and given one of their best performances of the season. Reds have managed to score 8 goals in just 2 games including 5 against Cardiff City which was the first time in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era that they have managed to score 5 goals in a game but the defense still looks shaky and United are in for buying a centre back in the coming winter transfer window.

But one worry still remains that Ole Gunnar has to address so as to lead Manchester United to any success this season which is their defense. Despite scoring 8 goals, the Reds failed to keep a single clean sheet in the 2 games despite easy opponents.

United have constantly struggled to find a perfect back four despite reinforcements. The Jose Mourinho managed side tested various combinations and experienced both youth and experienced centre back combination but all failed to give solidity at the back.

Fullbacks also seemed a worry for them last season but after securing a long-term deal with Luke Shaw and impressive performances from Matteo Darmian and Diogo Dalot has to a large extent

Phil Jones had a very impressive last season after starting most of the games, but this season, the centre back failed for consistency throughout. The 26-year-old has even lost his place in the English squad after failing to impress.

Lindelof was Jose Mourinho’s new recruit last season but failed to live up to the hype surrounding him. Smalling, the old guard was often considered done at the club and fans expected him to be replaced in the squad very soon. But after having signed a new deal at the club fans have had a mixed reaction to it.

Eric Baily was considered as the future of the club but the young centre back has constantly struggled with injuries and also consistency.

Manchester United have been linked with many Centre Backs but the 5 top targets for The Reds are:

1. Toby Alderweireld

The Spurs centre back has been linked with a move away from the club for over a year now. The Belgian was under contract with Tottenham so any move failed to materialize.

But Spurs have very recently triggered the one-year extension on his contract which also means that his release clause of 25 million has also been activated and any club can approach Spurs for his signature. After Davison Sanchez’s arrival, he has fallen out of favor and is likely to move away.

2. Kalidou Koulibaly

The Napoli centre back is considered as one of the best centre backs of the world. The young French international has failed to get starts for his national side due to the presence of Umtiti and Varane. The 6’5″ is a strong, powerful defender and the 27-year-old is an ideal candidate to fill the void.

3. Harry Maguire

Maguire is one of the best English centre backs currently and a regular in English Starting XI. He is very highly rated and was very sought after defender in the previous summer window. But he signed a new deal with Leicester City. This deal also made his release clause as high as 75 million. He has been very consistent in the Premier League and hence an ideal replacement for the club.

4. Lewis Dunk

The Brighton Hove and Albion English centre back has been one of the biggest shining points for the newly promoted side. He can also be a much cheaper option than many others. The other fact that he is English can be an added benefit for the squad.

He is also a constant threat from set pieces, he has scored more goals than any other Manchester United centre back has. The versatile defender can be a great cut-price option for the club.

After an impressive boxing day win, Manchester United face Bournemouth in an interesting Premier League fixture which will also be the last game week of the year and The Reds would be looking to end their year with a win.
