De Jong Deal Boosts United’s Chances to Sign Premier League Midfielder, Player to Make Decision on his Future

Christian Eriksen, Manchester United, Brentford

According to Sky Sports, the choice is now down to deciding between Brentford and Manchester United for Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. The 30-year-old is set to make a decision about his future and the options have been narrowed down to the above two Premier League clubs.

Both the clubs have tabled attractive offers for the Denmark international. Manchester United are thought to have outdone Brentford with their deal, thanks to their strong financial state, but the decision eventually falls to Christian Eriksen, who is yet to make a call between the two clubs.

The Dane earlier played in the Premier League for Tottenham between 2013 to 2020, making over 300 appearances for the Lilywhites (stats via transfermarkt) before leaving to Italy. The former Spurs midfielder, who suffered a near-fatal cardiac arrest during the UEFA Euro 2020, started his road to recovery at Ajax last season.

Then Ajax manager Erik ten Hag allowed Eriksen to train with his squad. He then moved to Brentford on a free transfer in January and started garnering plaudits within a short period for his impressive performances. He scored a goal and gave four assists in 11 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt).

The Dutch manager watched the player return to full fitness. Ten Hag is greatly impressed with the former Tottenham midfielder’s quality and commitment. The United boss is reportedly keen on signing the attacking midfielder ahead of the new campaign as a part of the rebuild at the club. He feels that the 30-year-old will be the ‘perfect signing to launch his revolution’ at Old Trafford.

However, according to Metro, the Danish midfielder is deliberately delaying the decision to choose his destination. Christian Eriksen wants to see how the Red Devils perform in the early stages of the transfer window before finally deciding whether it will be better for him to stay at Brentford or join United.

Meanwhile, the Dane is highly attracted by the prospect of playing alongside Frenkie de Jong. With the Manchester club finally closing in on signing the Dutch midfielder, having agreed on an initial fee, the chances of convincing Eriksen to move to Old Trafford could be boosted.

In a recent interview, Christian Eriksen told Viaplay (via Sports Mole):

“There are many criteria and many different things inside such a decision. Sometimes it goes fast in football, other times a little slower. I have to make the best decision and not rush anything through.”

“I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision.”

The Dane’s short-term contract with the Bees is set to expire at the end of this month. It is unlikely that he will re-sign for Tottenham Hotspur. With United’s prospects looking more appealing and financially attractive, it is likely that the midfielder will fancy moving to Old Trafford in the upcoming season.

The Danish international seems poised to be a starter in the midfield line-up at United, who could still perform at the highest level in the English top-flight. Thus, he is said to be one of Ten Hag’s priority targets in this summer transfer window.

However, it is not certain if he will continue to prosper under Thomas Frank at Brentford where he will get much less support than what will be made available to him at Manchester United.
